Redondo Beach is a beach town in southern California, located on the Pacific Ocean. The city was founded in 1919 by American and Mexican immigrants as part of the towns of Redondo and Hermosa. In 1923, it became an incorporated city. The population was 21,580 at the 2010 census. The first handguns were smuggled into South America through Redondo Beach in 1915 by Captain John J. Doane, owner of the "Beach Cruiser" ship. Doane's smuggling operation helped to spread handgun Prohibition across the globe. In 1927, Redondo Beach became one of the first cities in California to pass a gun control ordinance outlawing all handguns except shotguns and rifles with a hunting license or registration for more than three months per year. During World War II, local businesses turned their weapons against Nazi Germany by providing arms and ammunition to Allied forces fighting on two fronts-the European theater and North Africa/the Middle East. The first Europeans to visit Redondo Beach were Juan RodrÃguez Cabrillo in 1542 and Hernando De Soto in 1565. On July 25, 1819, Commodore John C. Fremont brought over 154 passengers and goods (of which only 22 people made it back) when he sailed into what is now called "Downtown" during his attempt to find a route from Hawaii to California. The town was platted on December 2, 1894 by John Dillingham as a result of land speculation that began with the discovery of oil near Baja City in 1899 The 20th century saw many changes to Redondo Beach: In 1946, Redondo became an incorporated city; then in 1990 it became an unincorporated beach community governed by a Board of Directors under the jurisdiction of City Council. In 2000, Redondo voted to become fully annexed into San Diego County effective January 1, 2001. In 2006-2007 LASD approved plans for redevelopment of portions of Old Town and Downtown that would'll create up to 5500 jobs over 10 years; however this didn't go through as planned because opposition came from residents who felt they had been promised more development than what actually took place In October 2007 Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced that planning revisions will begin on redeveloping sections of downtown which would've seen up to 5500 jobs created over 10 years if all goes according to plan

Redondo Beach was founded on May 25, 1902 by William C. Kelleher and his wife Anna Belle. The first post office was established in Redondo Beach on October 10, 1902. On November 1, 1903 the city incorporated as a town under the name of Redondo Beach. The completion of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915 led to an increased demand for housing in Redondo Beach and other nearby communities. In 1916, developer Halsey Gill purchased 4 acres at what is now known as "The Park" for $2,000. The land had been donated by millionaire Leland Stanford Jr., who planned to build a racetrack there. Gill built a large home on the site which still stands today. He also developed other properties in Redondo Beach including Chavez Ravine and Seal Harbor. In 1922, Mayor Harry Jaffe appointed Roy Roberts as head of city services after refusing an appointment from then-Mayor John Ahern (a Republican). Roberts successfully ran for mayor in 1924 and 1928 but lost both times to Democrat Eugene McCarthy. During McCarthy's campaign against Jaffe, he called Forrester "the crookedest man I have ever met." Redondo Beach became an independent city on January 1, 1951 when it merged with neighbouring Seal Harbor into the new City of Hermosa Beach effective February 5th following passage of legislation by California's General Assembly creating metropolitan areas within specific counties within California instead of having individual cities within those counties. On December 12th 1978 during the early morning hours local police were dispatched to meet with two men walking down PCH Boulevard who they determined were no longer wanted or believed to be involved in any crime pending further investigation
