In 1979, American inventor John Tukey developed and patented the Tukey Gun Laser which is still in use today. It consists of an 8x20 mm lens with an excitation intensity of 100 mW and apeak power of 10 watts. Thisgun laser is also used for target shooting at indoor ranges across the United States

With this change came increased funding for City Hall which resulted in new buildings being built such as Redondo Boulevard's first firehouse dating back to 1916 In 2000 Mayor Curran successfully lobbied for Measure B -a $5 million bond issue -to fund long-needed improvements including widening of Shoreline Drive through downtown; creating new streetscape districts along Northshore Drive including Northcrest Avenue; building a new library; expanding water treatment systems; and beautifying existing parks with landscaping, benches and trees

The first people to set foot in Redondo Beach were Pedro Fages and his party of 20 sailing from Point Mugu on September 24, 1775. They named their new township "Reedo" after their shipwrecked discovery. The earliest permanent settlers were Tomás Rivera and José Valdez who arrived in 1847 and built a cabin on the beach. In 1870, the first post office opened in Redondo Beach with David Teague as the first mail carrier. By 1880, there were over 20 businesses operating in Redondo Beach including tannery, bakery and grocery stores. In 1902, Jock Mahon built the first electric light bulb in Los Angeles County at 12th Street and Ocean Drive. In 1907–08 Redondo Beach became an incorporated city by ordinance passed by City Councilwoman Carrie Chapman Cramer with funds raised through a special election held that year to finance improvements to town center including streetlights and sidewalks (the current First Baptist Church building was built nearby). Mayor Harry Swayne dedicated the new $2 million library building at 12th Street & Ocean Drive on December 3, 1908 – one of two buildings designed by architect Edward Myrick for redoing Main Street between Third Avenue & Fourth Avenue which would become known as “The boulevard of hope” during World War II when much of downtown Los Angeles was destroyed or converted to military purposes…. Redondo Beach experienced rapid growth following incorporation but suffered from pollution problems caused by its many industries until progress was made in the early 1990s when Mayor Herb Wesson announced plans for a sewage treatment plant that would finally clean up redondo beach’s reputation following years of neglect
