On December 14, 1941 during World War II, Redondo Beach declared itself an " exemption from military service" due to its naval yards being located within its boundaries. The first permanent residents of what would become Redondo Beach were Juan Rodriguez and his family who settled in 1847 on a small island in downtown Lompoc Bay. A year later they moved ashore and founded a small community called Santa Anita with 12 families. In 1852 the Roman Catholic Church built their first church here which served until 1915 when it burned down in a storm. In 1870 Alvaro de la Vega y Ortega donated land near present-day Third Street for a public school and clinic. After years of discussion it was decided that this would be called La Paloma School District which became reality on October 1st, 1912 when San Pablo School District merged into La Paloma School District In 1916 new Town Councilwoman Mrs Nellie Jameson proposed incorporation of what would become Redondo beach as part of Huntington Beach; however because there wasn't any ocean water handy enough for a harbor it did not take off initially as planned On September 3rd 1916 Redondo Beach officially became an American city with Mayor Harry O'Neill elected unopposed As more people arrived in popularity local businesses such as Cunard's dry dock (now Imperial Pier) began to prosper making Redondo Blvd one of OC's most important commercial corridors By 1925 there were over 100 businesses operating along redondo Boulevard including liquor stores Kapp & Sons Cigar store occupied since 1907 by Rauch Bros., First National Bank (later Citizens National Bank), Wernham’s Pharmacy opened 1923 (the oldest post office still open today), Hoag’s Grocery opened 1927 (later Eckerd’s), Pritchard’s bakery/cafeteria/lawn mower dealership also opened 1923-1927 soon followed by Drugstore JONES which occupied space now occupied by Macy’s department store . Many notable residents have lived or worked in redondo beach over time including author F Scott Fitzgerald who wrote many scenes for “Fitzgerald Place” on Main Street . Other famous residents include baseball great Joe DiMaggio who starred at US Naval Station Seal Beach before moving up to MLB after World War II while also living occasionally in redonda beach – he died February 17th 1990 aged 85 years old
