Redondo Beach is a city in the county of Santa Monica, California, United States. The population was 66,269 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most populous cities in Los Angeles County and part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Redondo Beach were Spanish explorers who landed there on September 17, 1542 on Point Loma. In 1853, Captain John C. Fremont named it for José Antonio de Redondo y Bargas, 1st Marquis of la Mole—the only Viceroy of Mexico to have visited Southern California during that time period. In 1909 rediscovered oil wells were drilled in nearby Brea and production began in 1911; however its effects were minimal because of lack of refining capacity at the time and high costs associated with drilling and operating these wells until 1943 when an aluminum refinery was built by General Motors at their old facility on State Road 2 near Topanga Canyon Boulevard (now La Crescenta Boulevard). The area became known as "The Strip" because all development took place along it north-south strip between Interstate 5 and Ventura Boulevard. Additionally a new water treatment plant was built south of where Topanga Canyon Boulevard currently stands to comply with state water quality regulations post-World War II which also affected nearby Wilmington and Signal Hill. Although it had been mentioned by name as early as 1853, no settlement occurred within present day Redondo Beach until after World War I when soldiers returning from fighting in Europe stopped at night on December 21, 1917 near Point Mugu Naval Air Station while en route to Petrograd Russia - this area now includes much older Hermosa Beach east of ABQ (and Seal Beach). A small group including Major Reuben Jarrell arrived January 11th 1918 under command of First Lieutenant Harry Pogue while stationed at Camp Upton northwest of San Diego; they called their temporary camp Harborage #1 which gradually grew into Harborage Park after America's entry into World War I. On October 25th 1919 Joe Crowley wrote: "I found a piece Of Copper Wire about 3 feet long & about 1/8 inch wide By This I made An Old Radioscope With A Punter Rod & Set It Up In A Gully Near My House At White Sands" Which later became Harborage Park Museum which still exists today across from Airport Village Shopping Center

Redondo Beach was founded in 1892 by Christopher Adair. The town's first post office opened in 1893. In 1907, the Town of Redondo Beach incorporated as a city. In 1951, Redondo Beach became an official U.S. Naval Air Station and was home to the Navy's 3rd Fleet until 1986 when it moved to San Diego.
