In 1907, Jimmie Cochran opened his first grocery store at First Street and Market Place; it still stands today as Cochran's Grocery & Clothing Store. That same year saw the opening of City Hall which served as both courthouse and meetings place until 1959 when new county hall was built across Market from City Hall. From 1909-1910 construction began on what would become known as "theDESERT PALACE"—a five-story building designed by architect Henry Hornbostel that included a pool and room service restaurant inside as well as apartments upstairs for government workers or their families during drought years when transportation didn't exist to bring food into town from outlying areas like Victorville or Palm Springs. In 1915 local contractor Harry Elkins started work on what would become known as "theMILITARY CEMETERY", located east of present day Civic Center Road between Adobe Road and Iverson Road (now Ulysses S Grant Boulevard). Over 500 soldiers are buried there including World War I veterans like Alvin York (UCLA football player) and George Armstrong Custer (1863-1937 Union officer). After World War II many military people moved away but their remains remain behind such as Retired Lt Col John Ahern who lives adjacent to Fort Bragg outside Concord CA where he used to take his dog for walks late at night

The first permanent settler in Redlands was Captain George Vancouver, who landed on October 16, 1779 upon his ship "Discovery" on what is nowthe site of downtown Redlands. At the time it was a small village of about 100 people. On July 15, 1853, Gold Rush fevericked townspeople and they elected James Hance as their first mayor to lead them through an emergency session of the City Council to devise means to prevent any further spread of disease. Redlands became an incorporated town on January 15, 1854 with Wm Sanger as its first Mayor and Cesar Chavez as its first treasurer/manager. On February 1st voters approved annexation by Stockton County for $2 per capita ($40 per year). In 1896 Redlands annexed most of Ceres and Amador Counties including some agricultural land north of Marysville that had been divided between those counties when they were created from Contra Costa County and Alameda County during the 1890s Native American eviction process known as Rancho Seco sale. With this annexation came new businesses (factory production) and residential development along State Route 99W which bisected Redlands then followed US Route 99E to Mill Creek before terminating at SR 99W again near present day Racine Avenue in downtown Redlands. In 1924 downtown business district experienced one significant event when The Peach Pit restaurant opened there becoming one of only two restaurants open in downtown until it closed in 1984 after being acquired by White Sands Casino & Resort also located adjacent to current day Interstate 5 southbound lanes east of I-5 exit 126A where SR 99E intersects I-5 just past milepost 124B
