Redlands, California is a city in the Inland Empire region of Southern California. The population was 109,845 at the 2010 census, making it the tenth-largest city in Los Angeles County. It lies east of downtown Los Angeles on the south bank of the San Gabriel River and is bordered by Pasadena to its north and east, Union City to its south and west, and Compton to its north. The name Redlands comes from Rancho La Brea Mexican land grant given in 1836 to José Paullón y Becerra. The first settlement in what would become Redlands was made on May 14, 1847 when George Witherspoon organized a party of thirteen men under the leadership of Captain John Cushing for exploratory purposes near present-day Sepulveda Boulevard and Highland Avenue. After finding no gold or other minerals worth exploiting, Witherspoon's group abandoned their search for ore some time after that. The first post office was established at this location on October 3rd, 1849 by A.H. Gaines with Pico del Rey as his mailing point due to an overpopulation problem within Los Angeles County at that time caused by an influx of new immigrants following Unification War victory over Mexico. On December 12th General Mariano Trigo relieved Captain Cushing as headmaster of Mission San Fernando de la Laguna because he saw no need for another mission in such a populous county In 1861 Redlands became part of larger Los Angeles County when it was split off from Orange County following General William Tecumseh Sherman's march through southern California during the American Civil War (1861-1865). At that time Redlands had a population totaling only about 350 people; today it has more than 100,000 residents Redlands' economy rapidly diversified following World War II as millions of Americans came home from serving in Europe and Asia. Industry played an important role in Redlanders' growth; major industries included automobiles (Ford Motor Company), shipbuilding (1948), aircraft manufacturing (Lockheed Martin Corporation), food processing (Amalgamated Food Inc.), papermaking (Eagle Paper Products Co.), printing presses (Goudey Press Co.), mining operations including copper mining near Mojave National Park (), plumbing construction (), real estate development (), agriculture () This growth continued into the 1960s and 1970s with significant contributions coming from defense spending during both world wars (); then again starting around 1980 with increased commercial activity (). Today many businesses operate out othered regions such as China (). Economic revitalization has been sparked by efforts to reduce environmental impact through sustainable practices (), attracting high technology companies (); increasing international commerce ();and Riverside/San Bernardino Counties becoming one large metropolitan area ().
