Redlands, California (/ˌrɛdʒn.aɪs/; officially the City of Redlands, Incorporated on December 12, 1912) is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 82,291 as of 2018. As of 2019 the estimated population for Redlands was 83,909 people. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Gabriel Valley and bordered by Encino to the east and Sylmar to the west. The first permanent settler in what is now Redlands were two brothers from Montreal named George and Pierre Parenteau who arrived on July 24, 1874. They built a cabin near present-day Sunland Park and named it Fortnightly Landing because they traveled frequently between Monterey Bay and their new home every week. In 1888 when Los Angeles County was organized out of part of San Bernardino County (the area now comprising Orange County), Redlands became one of its several towns within Los Angeles County. In 1912 when Redlands incorporated as an independent city it had a population of about 20 residents . By 1940 it had grown to over 100 residents with a hospital, library and many businesses downtown including groceries such as Safeway supermarket chain which opened its first store in 1951 . The modern day economy centers around education with much growth due to new medical facilities being developed in nearby cities such as Glendale and Verdugo Hills since red lands has been at the forefront in developing medical technology especially gene editing treatments

During World War II heavy industry continued to grow as戦争 resurrected America's need for fuel supplies; however most production stopped after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 halting all exports from California but restarting imports which raised prices dramatically while causing mass unemployment throughout much of the state
