The name "Redlands" comes from Spanish meaning “red sand” due to its location on sandy soil near both rivers that emptied into San Bernardino Creek - making it easy for Native Americans to find water sources year-round. In 1887 Mexican colonists named it Rancho Aguila Seca after their god of war “Aguila” which means Eagle or hawk in Spanish because of its frequent sightings across these hills during wars between bands of Apache and Shoshone Indians. After years of struggles against Siskiyou County government over land titles claimed by others including John Cranch alias Don Carlos Villarroel de la Hoz y Mendez who fought for Mexico against American Independence under Santa Ana I declared his lands public domain January 1st 1884 without compensation so that families could homestead them however no one did as part of this process they were allocated sections according to strength in numbers not rights within Mexican territory like we do today especially with all those new subdivisions being created throughout southern Kern county while Aguila Seca remained unclaimed until 1895 when Samuel Morse donated 5 square miles of upland south east corner creek bed along US 95 corridor from what is now town center past US 395 crossing used now by Verdugo Hills agricultural development then surveyor general Ewing assigned parcel number 640 but nothing happened till 1906 when rancher Wm J Service donated additional 20 acres just north east corner creek bed filling up much needed gap caused by original 160 acres given to him free alsoSurveyor General Hitchcock arranged donation with ranch hands Isaac Newton Howe & George Washington Fuller August 12th 1907 creating Town site name Redlands beneath crescent moon
