Redlands is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 26,272 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in San Bernardino County after Riverside. Redlands is located on the eastern edge of the Inland Empire and occupies a large area of both east and west San Bernardino Counties. It is bordered by cities of Ontario to the north and west, Lancaster to the east, and Joshua Tree National Park to the south. The downtown core of Redlands features several blocks of high-quality locally quarried granitestone Buildings dating back to 1892 include One Colorado Avenue, Kresser Tower (1912), Bechtel Tower (1920), First Presbyterian Church (1893) and others. The first European settler in what would become Redlands was Captain George Bridwell who arrived from England in 1799 with his family. Bridwell named his new land Rancho Verde which means "Verde Valley". He built a small adobe cabin here around 1802 before moving on to found other settlements including Rialto about 15 miles northeast near modern Pomona. By 1810 there were over 100 people living near present day Redlands when Mission Santa Barbara was founded by Father José Altuve in 1797 as part of an ongoing effort by Spanish Franciscans to convert all inland Native American villages into Catholicism. In 1824 Mexican nationals Manuel Nieto and Antonio Palou arrived from Mexico City with 200 acres (80 ha) adjacent to what is now downtown Redlands they called Rancho Atascadero de la Vieja or Rancho Rinconcal y Gramada for short because it was not yet surveyed as part of ImperialCounty boundaries that would be finalized two years later. This rancho lay within today's East End neighborhood where much development took place during early 19th century such as being home to many suffrage organizations active during California Gold Rush days such as those led by John Sutter and James Wolkowicz prior to statehood in 1850 including initial location for county courthouse just northeast of current day Cathedral Square across Main Street from Old Town Plaza hotel chain today'senterprise district known then as Downtown District although first planned for larger area bounded by Second Street on the north boundary next door then Temple Place onsite now Parthenon Theater parking lot east boundary also Lots 31-35 between 2nd & 3rd Avenues south boundary also now Foster Medical Center property just southeast corner Third Street/East Side Highway intersection . Some important buildings associated with this time period include old jail which still stands at 620 N 2nd St #2 inside stadium complex currently used mostly for storage local physician Dr Elisha Allen Hospital built 1800'S NW corner 2nd Ave S building original schoolhouse burned 1901 town hall redux rebuilt 1902 Masonic Lodge Building designed by architect Lorenzo Richards addition nearby LDS chapel completed 1915 .
