Redlands, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is located on the edge of the Mojave Desert and is close to Interstate 10. The original inhabitants of Redlands were the Mono people who lived there before European settlement began in 1769. The town was founded by Captain James Cook on October 10, 1853 as part of his exploration and settlement of California. At first it was called "New Almaden". In 1871, when gold was discovered near Redlands, settlers renamed it Redlands after one of their own towns in England - Almaden had been abandoned by its original owners because they believed that gold would not be found there. In 1924, Redlands became an incorporated city under state law and continued to grow with annexations from other cities until 1990 when it reached its current population size of 382. As a result of its growth and relative isolation from larger metropolitan areas within Southern California, Redlands has developed a distinctive character which has made it one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of southern California. Redlanders enjoy excellent weather year-round including mild temperatures during winter months; high productivity levels due to their productive irrigated agriculture;and rich cultural heritage which includes significant concentrations of artifacts dating back over 200 years

Redlands, California was founded on November 10, 1857, by George and Martha Hetchinson. Redlands became a city on December 15, 1868. The population of Redlands increased from 3,000 to 30,000 in the early 1870s as new settlers arrived from Northern California. In 1876, the City fathers passed an ordinance establishing a waterworks system that would provide drinking water for the entire city and for private wells within easy walking distance of each home. The Waterworks System was completed in 1888 and provided essential public utility services for Redlands until it was discontinued in 1976. The City of Redlands has been chronicling its history since it was founded. Documents dating back to 1857 show that the town’s name originated with Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo who named it San José de los Padres (the Hill of the Padres). In 1863-1864 Postmaster General John Cranch donated land to be used as a rural township which would eventually become Redlands. On October 7, 1865 at 4:00 PM local time, Mayor Elisha Cook dedicated what is now known as First Street between First and Second Streets in downtown Redlands after being designated by order of President Abraham Lincoln following passage of the Morrill Land Grant Act The first settler in what is now known as Redlands were George Hetchinson and his wife Martha Hetchinson who arrived on November 10th1857 from Stockton California aboard the "Dolphin". They were followed soon after by their two children: George A., age 5 months and Isabella G., age 3 years old
Redlands was founded in 1869 as a small farming community on the Red River. The town quickly became a popular stop for travelers on the old California Trail, and by 1886 it had become an incorporated town. During its early years, Redlands was known for its fruit trees and flour mills, but it soon became well-known for its manufacturing base including bicycles and radios. In the 1940s and 1950s, Redlands became a center of aerospace engineering after numerous companies located their headquarters there. Today, Redlands is home to several large businesses such as Bendix Corporation, Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company, Oracle Corporation and HewlettPackard Enterprise.
