In 1851, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort in what is now downtown Redlands after driving out an estimated 20,000 Mexican settlers on his new Rancho Cuyamaca land grant. Sutter's fort served as a base of operations for his ongoing explorations through central California and he named one of his daughters "California" in honor of King George III of England who had granted him the land. In 1864, American Civil War General George Armstrong Custer fought his way across Central California from settlements east of San Bernardino Mountains to reach Gold Rushtown at Stockton (now Sacramento) before being stopped by Mexican forces at Bakersfield about 60 miles west of Redlands Junction on October 16th; Custer was killed that day while seeking revenge against Mexico for its defeat at Palo Alto two weeks earlier. A plaque marking the spot where he died still stands today next to Interstate 5 south of town. During World War II, many soldiers came through Redlands to rest or use local hospitals during their journey up North to fight in combat overseas. One such soldier was General Dwight Eisenhower who spent time here between 1944-1945 when he was commanderof Allied Forces Europe and headquartered at nearby Chatsworth Army Airfield northwest of town. Today Redlanders are known for their agricultural products – grapes, apples, almonds -- as well as their annual flower show which takes place in early November around Yuma Park downtown square
Redlands was founded in 1859 by John S. Fremont and George W. Richardson as the first town in Alta County, California. The area now includes the city of Redlands and portions of Antelope Valley, Lancaster, Oracle, Moreno Valley and Fullerton counties.
