Smith as an agricultural center on the west side of the San Gabriel Mountains. The city's namesake, Redlands Lake, was created in 1907 from part of the former Shasta River Valley. As a result of its location, Redlands became an important center for ammunition production during World War II. The city has since become a bedroom community for Los Angeles County, with over 60% of its population living outside the city limits.

In 1907, American Ammunition founded an armory here and continued to produce ammo until 1926 when it merged with Winchester Arms Incorporated to form Winchester Ammunition Corporation.

Redlands is located on the western edge of San Bernardino County and the eastern edge of Riverside County. The area now called Redlands was first inhabited by the Tongva people, who occupied hills along what is now US 101 north of present-day Redlands. The Tongva were later displaced by the Kumeyaay people, who also lived in this area at that time. mission and adobe buildings were built around 1849 near what is now US 101 and White Mountain Road by Father José Altuve and Father Francisco Atanasio de la Peña, both Catholic missionaries from Tucson Arizona. In 1857 Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna discovered new land to the east of his original holdings when he invaded California during the Mexican–American War. He named it Rancho Niguel after General Nieto's home province of Nogales Mexico. A group of Anglo Americans led by Captain John Sutter purchased Rancho Niguel from Santa Ana for $4,000 on December 12, 1857; Sutter named it "Redlands". In 1912 Redlands became an incorporated town with a population of 15 residents when it annexed parts of nearby Glendale and Porterville (now Porterville). On November 6th 1911 voters approved Measure W which changed all municipalities within Los Angeles County into cities status effective January 1st 1912 with a population increase from 5 inhabitants to 25 citizens per municipality limit no matter how small or unincorporated their boundaries might be. A year earlier on October 3rd 1910 Los Angeles City Council had authorized Mayor George Hearn to annex portions of Glendale (population: 21), Porterville (population: 10), Hawthorne (population: 4) & North Hollywood (population: 2) without first seeking voter approval as part of efforts to improve transportation connections between downtown LA & these newly annexed communities while still preserving some rural character to each community through annexation limits placed on other municipalities not included in Hearn's proposed scheme because they were considered too small or agricultural for urban development purposes only including those towns exceeding 8 square miles in size which would have increased their populations up to 30 Citizens each as mandated under Measure W but due primarily to growth rates within neighboring Riverside County rather than any inadequacies within those annexations I believe that he did exactly what must be done if we are ever going to solve our persistent problems with traffic congestion especially during rush hour etc... my hope being that over time we will become like Downtown Los Angeles where everyone knows their neighbor so there are few surprises etc... The total population for all three cities combined increased from 25 citizens on January 1st 1912 to 73,827 residents just ten years later! This rapid growth can largely be attributed to two factors – More automobiles became available for purchase following World War I and Orange Blossom Creek began flowing abundantly into Pasadena & Monterrey making those cities much more accessible than they had been before as well as more jobs becoming available throughout Southern California due despite Proposition 13 vowing otherwise – making life easier financially for many Angelenos while reducing poverty across the entire county! While this expansion may have been good news economically speaking it also created challenges such as social tensions caused by rapidly increasing numbers living next door together without proper consideration given regarding privacy/safety issues particularly during night hours! Despite these challenges though continuing growth eventually halted due mainly To drought conditions affecting most parts of Southern California followed shortly thereafter By various natural disasters such as fires that swept through several areas particularly in Kern Valley resulting in significant job losses however recent growth has resumed albeit slowly
