The town was founded on November 15, 1850 by Captains John Totten and James Wolkowitz with about seventy pioneers who came overland from various parts of California including Sutter's Fort in San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles County. At first there were just five houses in town and only two people worked out of each house; later on there were more houses and businesses built along with a schoolhouse and other public buildings such as a jail or storehouses. The original railroad line ran through town but it was abandoned due to lack of customers or money in 1870; however, some locals still use relics from that days like a switch engine used on local trains until 1972 still standing next to Main Street Railroad station today!
