Redding is located about an hour south of Los Angeles and two hours north of Sacramento. The town was founded by Captain John Sutter in 1859 as a wintering stop on his overland journey from Stockton to Lompoc. The name "Redding" probably comes from the Spanish word "reindeer," which means "place where reindeers live." In 1868, when General George Armstrong Custer first marched through Redding, he named it for General United States Grant's daughter (the wife of his old friend John C. Fremont). Redding prospered during World War II because its location made it an ideal place to produce munitions and other military supplies needed by the war effort.
