The history of firearms in Redding, California goes back to the early 1800s. At that time, there were several small villages in and around Redding, including Butte Creek and Indian Rocks. The area was first populated by the Miwok Indians and then by the Chinese. In 1848, John C. Frémont set out from Sacramento on his First American Expedition to explore new land south of the Rockies. Heading eastward, he passed through what is now Redding on November 8th, 1848. From here, he took a circuitous route northwest until reaching Gold Camp on January 4th of 1850. There he established his headquarters with a detachment of about forty soldiers before continuing his exploratory mission westward along the Sierra Nevada Mountains to Promontory Point on July 28th of that year. At this point in its history, California had only recently become a United States territory and there was much debate as to whether or not firearms should be made available for use by Ulysses S. Grant’s forces stationed at Fort Yuma in Arizona Territory (see Forfeiture Act). After conferring with General James Halleck (commanding American forces in Mexican territory), Grant decided against using firearms within Mexican territory and instead authorized the purchase of rifles from European manufacturers subject to government inspection. This act marks the beginning of firearm regulation within Ulysses S. Grant’s presidency. A few months after arriving at Fort Yuma, Grant organized a force consisting mostlyof Californians under Major Doniphan Toombs for an expedition against Tejas Mountain which resulted in his death on September 14th,1850(See Battle Of Tejas Mountain). A day later another group led by Captain Philip Kearny arrived at Yuma following similar success but failed to achieve their objectives due to bad weather conditions near Promontory Summit(See Battle Of Promontory Summit). These events indicate that even during these difficult times there were people who saw opportunities for progress through arms control measures(Seefragmentation of Mexican military power). In 1851-1852 Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer led an expedition into present-day Nebraska Territory seeking information concerning gold fields north thereof.(SeeCuster Expedition) Withdrawing after finding no valuable deposits however leaving behind cannons emblazoned with “US ARMY” & other military insignia 2 miles wide & 3 deep across entire plain.) One hundred and twenty two guns were taken with him including many conversions from revolvers into muskets; this event is generally known as Theraiden Massacre.). In 1865–66 members of The Black Hole Gang conducted an ambush against wagon train men traveling through southern Oregon Route 66., resulting in four dead wagon drivers and ten wounded men includin six Americans.( See Black Hole Gang Incident) . Cottonwood also played an important role during this time period as both a transportation stopover for goods heading upriver towards points east along 187 mile long Oregon Trail as well as access point for travelers coming downriver past Death Valley National Monument/Monument Valley National Park.– More specifically:the town served as both a supply depot for travelers heading upstream via Soda Canyon Road while also providing convenient access to water sources located elsewhere on Capitol Reef Open Space Preserve.;[and] post office;[and] jail; gunsmithing shop; blacksmith shop.— As late as 1975 gunsmith Wm Hagedorn still worked at Cottonwood post office

In 2013, Redding began planning for what would become one of largest municipal redevelopment projects in California history—the $3 billion Area Rapid Transit (ART) project called "Red Line". As part of this project, Redding will be converted into one of two business districts within ART: Downtown Purple Heart District will include much of Redding's historic core as well as adjacent areas such as Cedar Hills Shopping Center;while Northside District will focus on significant redevelopment around BART stations including Santana Row and East Palo Alto Station
