In 1919, the observatory was purchased by George Ellery Hale and renamed the Hale-Ostrobotham Observatory. In 1951, the observatory was sold to The General Electric Company. In 1957, The General Electric Company merged with Westinghouse Electric Corporation and the observatory became part of Westinghouse Scientific Institution. In 1988, The General Electric Company divestiture resulted in ownership of both the Hale-Ostrobotham Observatory and its associated buildings by Japanese investors. As of 2017, there are no plans to move or sell either building.
Red Bluff, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. It was founded in 1879 by James Irvine and his brother-in-law, Hiram Beale. The Beales were the first white settlers in Red Bluff. Red Bluff is located on the banks of the Sacramento River, about 15 miles (24 km) east of Sacramento and 25 miles (40 km) south of San Francisco. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. The town was named after its location on bluffs overlooking both the Sacramento and American Rivers. In 1879, James Irvine built a ferry crossing over the American River to connect Red Bluff with Stockton, CA. Redding County was created in 1861 from parts of Alameda County and Contra Costa County. At that time it included most of today's southern Contra Costa County as well as all of present-day Orange County and part of San Bernardino County. The county seat was moved from Stockton to Redding in 1865 because there were no other towns within driving distance for farmers who needed to trade goods with their neighbors near San Francisco Bay
