Red Bluff's history dates back to 1852 when it was named for General George Custer during the Mexican-American War. At that time, many settlers were coming from eastern Oregon looking for land to settle in what is now Stanislaus County. This decision led to Red Bluff becoming one of the most important settlements on the Central Coast along with Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay Area towns such as Monterey and Half Moon Bay. The first store in Red Bluff opened its doors in 1853 and soon became an important part of local commerce. By 1860, there were seven stores in Red Bluff with two banks providing banking services and more than 100 residents living in this small community that straddled both sides of Main Street between Government Center (now Hastings Plaza) east of town and Butterfield Avenue west of town). The population peak occurred around 1870 when they numbered over 800 residents but by 1880 their numbers had decreased to about 500 due to increased demand from out-of-state miners who discovered gold near Red Hook on Hwy 101 north of town (the “gold rush” started around this time). By 1890, red earth brick buildings had replaced wooden structures as the primary building type within Red Bluffertown limits while frame buildings continued into the 1920s (although someframe structures did survive until 1970). A few stores remained open into later decades including Joes Hardware Store which closed its doors in 2000; however all other businesses have either closed or changed ownership since then making it one of most abandoned communities on record!

Red Bluff is a census-designated place in Humboldt County, California, United States. The population was 2,527 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Humboldt Bay between Redding and Ukiah. The first Europeans to visit what is now Red Bluff were Spanish explorers in 1769, who named it "Hueco" (Spanish for "hill"). In 1821, Russians discovered gold here and founded an adobe settlement which became known as Red Bluff. A post office called Red Bluff was established in 1827, but no town took form until 1836 when citizens of Ukiah petitioned the state to name a town after them because they were suffering from lack of industry. The name honors General John Bourke who fought at Battle of Buena Vista against Mexican forces in1846. The town was platted on February 10, 1840 by Jno. Fyfe & Wm Stephenson with lots measuring 1/4 mile square containing 20 acres gridiron laid out west to east with streets running north to south and one alley running east to west; thence by chain mail fence across lot line leading up hill side to Main Street where it crossed railway tracks; thence by Main Street down slope or bank of river 10 rods into water then turning easterly and following channel back up stream about 3 rods before reaching source of river whence main stem led upstream

By 1860, Red Bluff had a population of over 100 people. In 1865, Mormon missionaries traveled from Utah to preach Christianity to local people in Red Bluff. This initial effort led to increased religious activity and trade in the area, which helped spur development of the town. Over time, however, tensions between Mormons and non-Mormons began to increase as well as violence erupting between these groups. In 1870, an LDS church temple was erected in Red Bluff and soon afterward polygamy became an issue among some members of the community. As a result of this conflict, many residents left the town for fear of being prosecuted or worse if they continued practicing their religion under new conditions.
