Red Bluff, California is a town located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. The population was 9,531 at the 2000 census. It is part of Kern County. The town has been inhabited by humans since the time of Puebloans and Mohawk Indians. In 1848, prospectors discovered gold near Red Bluff and named it after its color (red), but no settlement came about because of this discovery until 1857 when James Waddell founded the first post office in Red Bluff on the east side of Yuma Creek. The original name for Red Bluff was "Humboldt" because most alluvial gold had been found there by Humboldt Brothers interests from 1860 to 1865. 2 days after Gold Rush started, Waddell's group discovered silver over on Cathedral Ranch just outside town limits! Mineral rights were patented to him and others including J A Seaton on 25 Apr 1861 which included 3-mile stretch between present day Main Street & Nowhere Road NW extending across what is now State Route 179 North to Roberts Road North; Also patentee was John Sutter who became an owner of claims northward up Temple Valley past Mountain Meadows and east along White Sands Fault as far as today’s Jerome National Monument where his claim crossed SR 179 into Nevada In 1868 four men left from Humboldt called themselves “Waltzing Mathews” led by Nathaniel Cotterweather built a small cabin two miles south of present day Town Square on what is now US 395 West before their journey turned back due to bad weather May 17th 1870 They finally reached civilization only to realize that they had not seen any other human beings for hundreds or even thousands of miles so they abandoned their tent colony 2400 feet above sea level at Mt Whitney Atop Mt Whitney Narrow peak
