Fremont named it after General Antonio José de la Hoz y Pacheco, who had lost his way near Monterey Bay during an attempt to find San Francisco Bay. In 1868, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in Northern California by prospectors led by James Waddell and others associated with the US Army Corps of Engineers under General Ulysses S Grant while they were building Fort Yuma on the site of present-day Yuba City east of Red Bluff. This helped contribute to Gold Rush fever throughout much of California; gold was found at various locations including Atascadero Creek near today's Porterville and Atwater Oaks near Ukiah before being shipped off to San Francisco for smelting into coins or jewelry until 1861 whenilver became available as well Goldmining resumed in earnest following World War II as more people arrived in search for new opportunities; mines opened at Uniontown (now Redding) and Agoura Hills before reaching their peak production around 1960 with 9 million ounces (285 thousand metric tons) produced annually It wasn't until 1974 when a group of local businessmen purchased a mine abandoned several miles outside town limits—the first commercial operation within town boundaries since 1907 The boom ended abruptly when cyanide gas started flowing out of the mine due to problems with sulfur mining operations; this led to social unrest among Mine workers which ultimately led to their quitting en masse two years later After almost half-a-century mining operations ceased completely in 1999 following discoveryof unconventional ore deposits adjacenttothe old mill site Today there are only limited use features remaining such as visitor centers providing exhibits about early history & technology behind metal processing & modern day uses

It is located on the southern border of Kern County and it forms part of the Bakersfield metropolitan area. Red Bluff has been inhabited by Native Americans since at least 1810. The first white people to visit Red Bluff were prospectors who discovered gold in nearby Sutter's Valley in 1849. The town was founded on October 12, 1861 by James Moulder and his brother-in-law William Waddell as a trading post between Sutter's Valley and Bakersfield. Moulder named the town after Santa Rosa Island off the coast of San Francisco Bay where he had landed his shipwrecked party three years earlier while exploring what would become California. In 1868, John Wesley Powell discovered Lake Tahoe which soon became an important water source for Red Bluff. In 1870, Red Bluff got its own Post Office when Sutter's Valley incorporated as a city under state law. The discovery of oil in 1938 led to an increase in traffic to Red Bluff from surrounding communities such as Bakersfield and Porterville but also caused some problems for locals because truckers couldn't stop at intersections without causing lane closures that interfered with local businesses' ability to sell their products
Red Bluff was founded by Captain George Armstrong in 1859. The town was originally named "Atherton" after the nearby Atherton Mountain. In 1872, Red Bluff became a post office and in 1876, the first store was built. In 1902, the first hospital was erected and in 1915, the first school opened.
