Red Bluff is a small town in the Mojave Desert of California. It is located east of the city of Las Vegas, and north-northwest of Reno. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. The first European to arrive in Red Bluff was José Rivera on July 10, 1847 when he set out from San Francisco with his brother Sebastián. They were looking for a shorter route to Los Angeles than what had been traveled by previous pioneers such as John Cranch and Jedediah Smith. Rivera named his new location "Los Angeles" after his Mexican hometown of Acapulco where he had grown up. In 1851, Tomás de la Hoz y Costilla arrived from Mexico City with his wife María Elena Chavez and their children Tomas (born about 1849) and María José (born about1852). Juan Bautista Pena also came overland from New Mexico in 1850 but did not settle permanently in Red Bluff until 1857 when he purchased land that now makes up part of the eastern edge of present-day Red Bluff. In 1861 Pedro Cámpora settled here after arriving from Zacatecas, Mexico on horseback through what is now Nevada Territory waters on Sacramento Lake which then drained into the Colorado River near Carson City before joining it southward to join the Sacramento River near modern day Woodruff National Forest outside Ofey/Las Vegas hearing about gold quartz discovered near Eureka in 1848 while prospecting along the Carson River between today's North Las Vegas Boulevard and Hoover Dam areas; however no mining ever took place around this area as it would have required crossing high mountain ranges which at that time lay beyond any known country or settlement boundaries. The fort was abandoned after only a year, but it still stands today as a historic landmark close to Interstate 10 and the University of Southern California's campus. In 1821, Mexican land Grants were issued for Rancholos Blancos (White Lands) which became known as Rancho Los Olivos (Lawns), also called "Redoubt." In 1827, Manuel Nieto acquired Rancho Los Olivos from José Joaquin Cámpora and made it into a full rancho with boundary changes that included lots near present-day Red Bluff including Coyote Valley, Slaughter Valley, and Gaviota Mountain range west ofpresent day Red Bluff; these lands became known as North Ranches when they were sold off in 1881 to James Hahn and his partners who established Anza Mining Company (). In 1882 John Sutter bought red earth from local farmers at what is now White Sands Missile Range for $1 per ton () He then began building his new citysite on the mesa overlooking Indian Wells Reservoir about three miles east of present day Red Bliff
