In 1872, a company called The American Signal Company was founded in Red Bluff. They manufactured and sold Signaling Devices for Ships and Boats. This company continued until about 1917 when they merged with another company to form United Signal Manufacturing Company. At this time, gunlights became an integral part of maritime signalling. A number of different types of gun lights were produced by United Signal Manufacturing Company including the Big Ben, White Star, Blitzen, Union Jack and National Emblem Gun Lights. Some of these light designs remained popular through the years while others were discontinued. Many different companies madegunlights over the years but one common design was developed by The American Signal Company which is still in use today.

Red Bluff is a census-designated place in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1871 as a result of goldmining activity in the area. The name "Red Bluff" comes from the red sandstone that covers much of the area. Gold was discovered at Red Bluff on December 15, 1868 by James Mosely and his party while prospecting for gold near Lompoc. After finding some rich veins they quickly abandoned their claims and returned to town to assay their finds before returning out to explore other prospects nearby. In 1870 Jno Mosely erected a small brick building which served as both store and post office until 1915 when it burned down due to fire caused by an over-rating of placer gold potential in that vicinity. In 1875 John Sutter began developing what would become known as Sutter's Mill with its sawmill, gristmill and blacksmith shop on the site now occupied by Red Bluff Elementary School; he also built a small cabin near the mill for use as a hotel during his Gold Rush days (the first such structure west of Sierra Leone). By 1880 Sutter had developed what became known as "The Village." A year later he donated land east of town along Center Street for a public school which opened in October 1881; today's Red Bluff Elementary School originates from this schoolhouse. During World War II many civilians were evacuated from Red Bluff due to air raids, most notably on September 16th 1944 whenbombing missions destroyed dozens of homes and businesses including Red Bluffs Post Office Building killing 5 people; these civilian casualties motivated President Franklin D Roosevelt to order American military forces not enter into combat until after all targeted targets had been removed or damage had been repaired.

Red Bluff was founded in 1848 as a trading post on the present-day border of Nevada and Arizona. After Mexican independence in 1810, the United States acquired what is now southeastern California, including Red Bluff. In 1847, Captain John C. Fremont explored the region and named it for his El Dorado County home Rancho San Miguel de las Mesas (the mountain range to the east). In 1860, gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill in Nevada and soon thereafter, numerous miners arrived in Red Bluff to exploit this new discovery. Gold production at Sutter's Mill peaked in 1865 but began to decline rapidly due to over-exploration and smelting issues. By 1870, all mining operations had ceased except for a small goldfield around Mineral Wells. The town of Red Bluff emerged from its heyday as an agricultural center during the late 19th century as more people turnedTo ranching and farming rather than mining or prospecting. The first post office was established here on November 12, 1888. Today, RedBluff rests atop of one of North America's most ancient goldfields - known today only by traces of soil and rocks remaining from when large veins of gold were mined here between 1800 and 1850 ().
