The hills around town make perfect fall or winter settings for trees covered with red or yellow apples since they provide plenty of shade during these months while not taking up too much space inside homes.
Red Bluff is located in the San Joaquin Valley of California, about halfway between Sacramento and Fresno. The town was founded in 1853 by J.D. Hammond, a surveyor who named it after his Helena Ranch on the Red Bluff River. It began as a small farming community, but soon became an important stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route between California and Oregon. In 1875, Hammond sold the town to John Sutter for $10,000. Sutter used it as a staging post for his gold-mining expedition to find new sources of silver and gold in what is now Nevada. The population peaked at around 1,500 in 1920 but declined during the Great Depression because of low agricultural prices and lack of jobs in the mining industry.
