Rancho Santa Margarita was founded in 1775 by Juan Vizcaino and his wife, María de la Luz. The rancho came to include present-day Santa Margarita County and parts of Orange County. In 1821, the del Rey family acquired the land from Vizcaino. They kept it until 1903 when it was sold to the United States Government for use as a military reservation.
