Rancho Santa Margarita is a small, unincorporated community in San Diego County, California. It is located on the western edge of Rancho Santa Margarita National Forest. The name comes from the Mission Dolores Chapel which was built there in 1836. The first recorded sighting of a telescope in Rancho Santa Margarita was made by Nicholas-Jacques Conte on December 5th, 1795 while travelling to Monterey Bay. At that time, he used a simple pointed mirror to view the stars at night and noticed that they were very large and brighter than anything he had seen before. He took some pictures with his camera of these objects and sent them off to France. In 1844 American astronomer Joshua Laughlin erected the first reflecting telescope in America at Green Bank Observatory near Williamsburg, Virginia. This instrument greatly helped improve astronomy throughout much of the 19th century because it could now detect far moreobjects than could be seen with earlier instruments. In 1869 Russian scientist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky discovered radio waves and started using telescopes to study them extensively during this era. He played an important role in helping develop technology for radios and radar as well as understanding spaceflight phenomena such as space weather events. A new observatory was built at Rancho Santa Margarita in 1923 by Drs., Franklin Doidge and Edward Condon after being inspired by their discovery that meteors were falling out of the sky like rainbows rather than from the sun! The observing tower still stands today and can accommodate up to 114 viewers!

Rancho Santa Margarita is a community located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 53,912 at the 2010 census. Rancho Santa Margarita is bordered by Menifee to the east and north, Riverside to the west and south, and Ontario to the east. It is made up of rolling hills with vineyards and orchards in its center and contains several small villages scattered around it. The first Europeans to visit Rancho Santa Margarita were José Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 25, 1542 and Hernando De Soto on March 8, 1543. ranchos de las rocas meaning "rocky hills" were granted by Spain to Manuel Nieto in 1777 while still part of Alta California. In 1848 earthquake destroyed Mission San Gabriel de Alcala which had been founded in 1771 by Franciscan padre Junipero Serra. The mission was replaced by Presidio of San Bernardino (1850), First American Republic (1865) then State University of California (1916). In 1875 Mexican land grants became available for ranchers who purchased them from Mexico City government as part of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. On February 14, 1888 United States acquired much of what are now eastern San Bernardino County from Mexico through the Gadsden Purchase. Santa Margarita was incorporated as a town in 1912 when parts adjacent to Riverside were annexed into that city also including menyerite Hills which extend over most if not all of today's rural areas within rancho boundaries between Menifee Valley on one side and Yorba Linda Valley on the other side

After Mexican independence from Spain in 1821, ranchos were administered by Baja California Province under governor Manuel Micheltorena. In 1865 an act was passed which granted land titles to foreigners who owned more than 4 acres within 50 miles (80 km) of any city or town on the peninsula. This grant enabled settlers to purchase land near Los Angeles without having to go through the formalities required for annexation into a municipality like Los Angeles or Pasadena. With this new method of acquiring land came new opportunities for commerce and investment as developers realized that they could sell access to unincorporated areas for development into cities with large populations potential buyers eager to move away from small-town living conditions and take advantage of opportunities for rapid expansion offered by such developments
The Rancho Santa Margarita was founded in 1879 by Jose Antonio Gomez and his wife, María Elena. The land for the ranch was acquired from Juan Bautista Alvarado who had been leaseholder of the Rancho Santa Margarita del Valle de San Vicente. In 1888, Gomez' son, Francisco Gomez took over management of the ranch. In 1912, the property was sold to Emile Noyes and became part of the Noyes family domain. In 1916, James Fenton bought out Noyes' share in the ranch and it passed into private hands until it was purchased by George W. Davis in 1941. Davis enlarged and developed the property into a large citrus empire that included many ranches across California. The ranchoSantaMargarita continue to be used today as a cattle center with some small portions also being leased out for wine production or agricultural purposes
