Many people consider Charlie Reeves to be one of the most important people to ever come from Rancho Santa Margarita because he brought television south from Northern California

The Rancho Santa Margarita land grant, given to Manuel Nieto in 1846, was one of the largest and most influential land grants in California. The grant covered 4,000 acres (16 km2) east of San Diego and south of Tijuana. The area became known as the "Rancho Santa Margarita" because it was part of a large ranchos granted by Governor Pio Pico to settlers in 1847. The grant formed the eastern border of what is today San Diego County and Baja California. Manuel Nieto founded the town of Rinconada on the site of present-day Rancho Santa Margarita in 1849. He built a small adobe chapel there and named it after his wife, Maria Elena de la Cruz y Echeverría y Ocampo, who had been married to him in Mexico City two years earlier. In 1850, he sold some portions of the ranchoSanta Margarita to new owners including José Hernandez and Antonio Carreon. In 1861, Mexican President Porfirio Diaz ordered all U.S.-owned lands along Mexico's southern border seized by order of Emperor Maximilian I. This action triggered a wide-ranging war between Mexico and the United States that lasted for more than 20 years. By 1865, much of northern California had become involved in this war; Rancho Santa Margarita lay within United States territory at this time. On February 22, 1865, following American victory over Maximilian I at Monterrey Bayou Bridge near El Cajon Pass., General Alfred Terry proclaimed that all remaining Mexican land east of Los Angeles had been given up completely by Vice President Agustín Carrillo al fine de la independencia total de México y su territorio en el Norte y Centro America; accordingly, Rancho Santa Margarita became partofthe United States Army Military Territory Of Southern California (MILITARY TERRITORY OF SUSPENSE/CALIFORNIA). Consequentlythe entireranchosalsobecamepropertyoftheUnitedStatesGovernmentandwasoperatedbyUstaysArmy until 1893 when it was placed under civilian control as partSantiago County.(Gonzalez et al., 1969: 11)
