In the late 1800s, Rancho Santa Margarita was a popular spot for shooters in California. The location provided perfect weather conditions for shooting and the natural resources allowed for prolific agricultural production. This helped make Rancho Santa Margarita one of the most important ranchos in southern California. One of the first areas to be developed at Rancho Santa Margarita was the Presidio of San Diego. This area included parts of present-day Rancho Santa Margarita as well as land that is now part of downtown San Diego. In 1824, Don José Antonio Carpintero started construction on what would become known as Carpintero Barracks. The barracks were used by both military and civilian leaders during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). Afterward, they served as a prison until 1865. The Presidio of San Diego also saw development in other areas including Coyote Canyon, which became today’s Old Town San Diego. As more people moved into this area, they needed spaces to live and work. To provide these new residents with space and infrastructure, the City Council created Coyote Canyon Park in 1881. Today’s Coyote Canyon neighborhood forms part of this park’s boundaries. During its early years at Rancho Santa Margarita, there wasn’t a lot done with regards to transportation or communication because it was thought that these would be important when larger populated areas were established nearby such as downtown San Diego or Los Angeles. However, after annexation by Los Angeles in 1853, transportation became an important issue because trains could travel through town without having to go through Pasadena or Westlake Village

Rancho Santa Margarita, California was a ranch in the San Bernardino Mountains that served as a military post from 1846 until it was abandoned in 1855. Rancho Santa Margarita was founded in 1847 by Antonio O. Sanchez and his wife, Maria Elena. They named the Rancho after Santa Margarita, a small town near Mission Valley on the California coast. The San Gabriel Mountains were much higher than where it is now and the ranch could only be reached by mounted riders or walking. The first land grant for Rancho Santa Margarita was made to José Manuel Nieto in 1851. By 1870, over 8,000 acres had been granted out to farming families. In 1875, a fire destroyed most of the villages in Mission Valley and many people turned to ranching as their primary source of food security. In 1888, Antonio Sanchez died and his son-in-law Hiram Allen took over management of Rancho Santa Margarita. Allen increased production on the ranch and also developed a water system that allowed for irrigation of crops far into inland Southern California. Around this time, Italian American settlers began arriving from Northern Italy and started working on the ranchos as well. In 1916, Mexican American pioneers arrived from Baja California and started working on some of the earliest ranches in East County including Rancho Rinconada which became part of Rinconada District in 1923
