Scope mounts were first developed in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, in the early 1900s. At that time, the area was sparsely populated and there wasn't much available land for farming. In 1830-31 Pico Rivera purchased 4 acres from Nieto for $2 per acre ($4 total). This land would later become known as "Pico Rojo" because of its color – Redondo Beach today shares this name with that same location on Pico Rivera Boulevard on Costa Mesa Boulevard.) In 1833-34 Enrique Gomez built a small adobe house on what is now East Coast Road at present-day State Route 66 near Mission Viejo Boulevard in Carlsbad Pomona Valley (now part of Claremont Village). On May 1st of that year he filed an application with the Mexican government for title to his rancho (ranche) which included 8 acres extending into modern day Orange County along Mission Viejo Boulevard eastward from State Route 66 just south of Interstate 5/UCLA Campus; henceforth known as Rancho Santa Margarita de la Selva (the original grant being filed under #8224291). Within two months following filing his application Gomez metamorphosed his adobe house into an observatory using his personal telescope - "El Aire Libre" - making use of natural light coming through nearby mountains reaching up to 3 kilometers altitude! El Aire Libre stands today as one example of early 20th century amateur telescope construction within walking distance or less from all residents!!! On July 10th 1834 Don José Ortiz granted Capt Manuel Nieto additional rights to 2nd lot mentioned earlier including 17acres extending northerly onto mission road at present day Sherman Oaks Blvd just east of Ventura Blvd between Irvine Spectrum Center Drive and San Marino Avenue also located within boundaries set forth hereinabove described lands………for ever hereafter providing said Capt Manuel Nieto shall erect upon said lots said Observatory building having separate entrance & exithall doors & windows exposing said Telescope contents inside & out….” He also awarded him 50% ownership interest in any future telescopes built on each lot purchased…..” To commemorate this event Capt Manuel Nieto erected “El Aire Libre” atop Mount Diablo hill overlooking downtown Los Angeles on November 15th 1934 commemorating this milestone occasion TX-14174A

The land that is now Rancho Santa Margarita was given to Juan Bautista de Anza, who founded Mission San Diego de Asís in 1769. In 1834, Rancho Santa Margarita was sold to Josefa Maria del Valle y Vargas and named after her husband, Joséfito del Valle. The del Valle family managed the ranch until it was sold to Rafael Borden in 1919. Borden added water rights and built a reservoir on theranchos property which provided drinking water for the town of La Quinta and other settlements around it.

Rancho Santa Margarita was a grant in California to José Antonio de Alvarado, who named it after the Argentine saint, Santa Margarita. The rancho eventually became part of the United States and was acquired by Rancho San Borja in 1853. The rancho was later sold to Francisco Palomares y Atienza and then to Manuel Nieto in 1881. It passed through several hands before becoming part of the Rancho Santa Fe corporation in 1912. In 1916, it passed back to the Mexico-born family of José María Pascual Pedraza y Soto, who continued to operate it until its sale in 1924 to Harry Laughlin and his partners. The rancho is now administered by the National Park Service as part of Monterey County Park System. The first Europeans known to have visited what is now Monterey County were Spanish missionaries, including Juan Bautista de Anzuela on October 26, 1769. From this initial sighting there were subsequent reports from other Mexican missionaries and traders over time culminating with Father Junípero Serra's expedition led by Gaspar Orozco on November 12–13, 1776 which mapped much of present-day Monterey County. On July 16, 1800 José Joaquín de Alvarado granted Rancho Santa Margarita alcalde title for himself and his brother Don Felipe Herrera Magallanes alias Nuño del Riego (February 21, 1700 – May 9, 1878). This grant made them landholders with government rights throughout most of what is now Monterey Peninsula excepting portions still under Mexican sovereignty at that time including parts of Buenaventura Province east of Point Reyes National Monument situated within present-day Ventura County; these areas would become U.S. territory following independence from Spain in 1821. The grantees included Father Junípero Serra among others who arrived here on horseback during the Request for Grant dated February 21st 1800 which outlined specific land grants that would be awarded across California pursuant to Article XII Section 2 Of The Mexican Constitution Of 1850 thereby creating "Alta California" or "Greater California". These grants covered almost all mainland California north of latitude 36° N including most of today's Los Angeles County as well as inland Kings Counties and Modoc County up until about track 25 southward where Landsborough Heights meets Lake Elsinore Creek; all except these counties had been previously unceded lands home rule under Mexican Rule prior thereto or ceded during hostilities between Mexico & England resulting from American victory at Tolsom Hill on December 7th1846 & consequent signing thereof into Treaty #9 (January 8th1847) whereby Sacramento Territory became integral partsof US while retains jurisdiction over various unimproved tracts located east/southeast/southwest thereof comprising approximately 82%, nearly half lying within present day Ventura County". A total area equal unto $6 million dollars was authorized + 500 adobe buildings were required along with fencing requirements including an earthen wall 20 feet high & ditch 5 feet deep inside property line running due north/southwesterly direction bondable at public expense for a period not exceeding 10 years subject also To annual inspection by office charged with developing proper methods fo water management

Rancho Santa Margarita was founded in 1881 by Spanish immigrants José and Mercedes de la Garza. The land that now makes up Rancho Santa Margarita was originally part of the Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, which was established in 1769. In 1881, José de la Garza sold the ranch to his friend and fellow Spaniard John Sutter. Sutter began to develop it into a cattle ranch and soon became one of the wealthiest men in California. He also built a large mansion on the property, which he called Villa Park.
