Rancho Santa Margarita is a census-designated place in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 5,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. Rancho Santa Margarita is located east of downtown Los Angeles and west of North Hollywood, between Canoga Park and Sylmar. The name "Rancho Santa Margarita" likely comes from Mexican land grants given to Spanish settlers in 1821 by Governor Manuel Michelin de la Rúa. The grant included what is today Rancho Santa Margarita County and some adjacent portions of Orange County. In 1892, part of the rancho was designated as a national monument called La Cañada Flintridge National Monument after General John Warner's purchase of about 54% of the property in that year for US$2 million. In 1912, Harry Chandler bought 6,000 acres (20 km²) north of downtown LA from José Joaquín Cisneros for $1 million; he named it Rancho Santa Margarita after his wife's family name (santamaría meaning "holy mountain"). His main residence was called Eastvale but later renamed Beverly Hills because most people thought it would sound more like Hollywood than Westvale which they considered too rustic sounding. In 1923 Catalina Island became part of LA when LA City Polytechnic merged with USC; Catalina became an enclave surrounded byLA city limits with its own police force and budget while still being governed by the US military government onshore on Catalina Island until 1959 when it reverted back to US civilian control under then Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. In 1821, it became part of Mexico and was known as the Rancho del Rio Hondo. In 1848, it became part of California and was known as the Rancho de las Palomas. In 1851, it became a state property and was called the Rancho del Norte. It changed its name to the Rancho Santa Margarita in 1896.
