After spending three weeks searching they located an area that would meet all their needs- its slopes were steep enough to support cattle but also wide enough to allow them to build homes. They named their new settlement after Saint Martha of Caesarea which they found at the bottom of a well known as Mineshaft Hill. The first house was built on October 15th, 1824 by Francisco Sanchez and his brother Juan Pablo Sanchez with help from father Pedro Fortunato de la Rúa y los Reyes. In 1829 Mexico gained its independence from Spain and Santa Margarita became Mexican territory The rancho continued to be administered by family members until it was sold in 1865 to Amedeo Perez Lamarilla who operated it until 1886 when it passed through ownership changes before becoming part of the United States Army Signal Corps during World War I. The Rancho Santa Margarita land grant was given to Francisco Lopez in 1848. The rancho stretched from modern day Rancho Santa Margarita, California south to the Mexican state of Baja California. In 1858, Lopez sold the rancho to Captain John Sutter for $5,000. Captain Sutter used it as a base camp for his Gold Rush venture in Nevada and established a fur trade with the Tongva people on the ranch. In 1864, Captain Sutter sold the rancho to James Irvine for $10,000. The Irvine family kept it until 1986 when it was donated to the City of San Diego by its last owner.
