Development at both installations led to increased social tensions which has led some officials over time to call for redevelopment or closure within the military-industrial complex that has grown up around them-although no such plans have ever materialized. Residential development begins around 1925 when William Randolph Hearst built his mansion near Miramar beach called Hearst Castle which served as headquarters for various Hearst media operations from then until his death in 1976

On July 14, 1824, the first phase of the San Andreas Fault earthquake Hits land in present-day Ventura County. The magnitude 7.9 quake left more than 120 people dead and leveled several buildings including the old adobe mission (now part of USC). In 1868, gold was found near Rancho Santa Margarita and began to be mined there. By 1880, silver had also been discovered in that area. Mining operations continued until 1903 when all mining ceased due to environmental concerns.
