Rancho Santa Margarita, located in the southern San Gabriel Valley, was first settled in 1847 by Mexican Americans. The area became a California Rancho after Mexico ceded it to the United States in 1848. In 1870, the rancho was sold to P.J. Price and his brother-in-law J.P. Morgan. They renamed it Rancho Santa Margarita and began to raise horses and cattle there. In 1916, Price died; his son continued to run the rancho until his death in 1978. During World War II, the rancho was used as an airfield for Army Air Forces bombers and served as a military post during the war years. After 1945, it reverted back to its original name of Rancho Santa Margarita (although some residents continue to use "Rancho" throughout). Rancho Santa Margarita was a ranch in Santa Margarita County, California, United States. It was founded by Rancho Cucamonga Mexican land grantee José María de la Garza in 1848 andSold to developer George Hearst in 1896. At its peak, the ranch held over 6,000 acres (2 km²). The ranch is located on what is now the border of Orange and Riverside counties. The original Rancho Santa Margarita property extended from present-day east Riverside Boulevard in Orange County north to what is now southbound Interstate 5 and eastward to present day Yorba Linda Avenue. The first European to visit the area that would become Rancho Santa Margaritaville was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 2, 1542 when he landed at San Pedro Bay on Mission san Gabriel Arcángel with his ships La Juana and El Legazpi. Lloyd's Register of British Shipping noted Spanish vessel La Real de Granada sailing into San Diego Harbour on October 7, 1769 "...for the purpose of watering horses at this place" but no further information is available about her cargo or voyage. In 1849 Mexican land grantee José María de la Garza acquired title to 1,600 acres (60 ha) around present-day central Santa Margarita from Ignacio Nieto de los Rios y García who had patented it in 1837. The grant covered an area that extended northeast from Mission Valley through Chino Hills and parts of Northridge as well as portions of Corona Heights and Sunland Park. Garza renamed his new holdings "RanchoSantaMargaritaville". He also established a post office there which became known as "Garzaville." In 1850 Garza sold part of his holdings including RanchoSantaMargarita back to Ignacio Nieto for $8,500 cash plus another $1 per acre ($0.50 per ha). In 1853 Móvil married Maria Antonia Breda y Sánchez; they had six children: Miguel Moraga (1854–1941), Francisco Javier Móvil (1856–1928), Josefina Mercader Alameda (1858–1920), Ramón Antonio Breda Moya (1860–1945), Adela Eugenia Martinez de la Torre ( 1862–1950). In 1861 rancher José Núñez purchased part of RanchoSantaMargaritaville from Garza for $10,000 cash plus an extra $2 per acre ($0.80 per ha). In 1865 Núñez donated 960 acres (.468 km²) adjacent to Rancho Santa Margaritaville east of downtown Los Angeles for public use only with 160 buildings included inside an 8-square-mile (.283 hectare) park named after him called Núñez Reservoir Park after him today. It remains one of Los Angeles' few open areas without fences or development limits today.. By 1893 most all parcels within the current boundaries were either bought or leased by developers such as George Hearst who developedrift properties such as Downtown LA along Central Avenue near USC campus., After years of being used primarily for grazing animals much of the property changed hands again before becoming home to various businesses such as citrus groves early on during prohibition era However many families still lived there until recently when some subdivisions were completed nearby making it difficult for locals access their own homes especially during drought years
The Rancho Santa Margarita was a Mexican land grant in the Santa Margarita Valley, north of Tijuana, Baja California. It was granted to Francisco Palomo on February 14, 1821. The Palomas were the first European settlers in what is now Tijuana. In 1827, Antonio López de Santa Anna granted Rancho Santa Margarita to Mariano Vallejo for his share of the road from San Diego to Mexicali. The rancho extended eastward from Vallejo's holdings into what is now Cameron County. In 1846, after Mexico gained its independence from Spain, President Manuel Juárez issued a decree giving all land grants in Baja California to citizens of Mexico who had settled there and made it their home. On March 16, 1846, Juárez issued another decree granting Rancho Santa Margarita to José Joaquín Murillo for his part of the road between San Diego and Mexicali. Murillo set aside 640 acres (250 hectares) of this new rancho for agriculture and developed it as the Villa Real Adobe Plantation. On October 15, 1888 an earthquake struck Coahuila Valley and parts of southern Baja California; much damage was done in Tijuana and other towns near Coahuila Valley Massacre Site where an estimated 100-200 people were killed by Indian insurgents during the 1840s Hidalgo Rebellion against Mexican rule over that region
