Wickersham continued to operate it as a family-owned business until his death in 1957. From then on, it was managed by two brothers, Don and Jerry Wickerham. In 1966, Don and Jerry Wickerham's son Randy inherited Rancho Santa Margarita from them. Randy became its owner and operator until he died in 1984. At Randy's death, Rancho Santa Margarita passed through several hands before finally becoming part of the permanent holdings of the Crawford family in 1987. Currently, it is managed by their daughter Driscoll Crawford Browning-Wickerham. The area that would later become Rancho Santa Margarita was first inhabited by the Ohlone people. In 1821, Mexican soldiers under General José Joaquin Cortés conquered what is now San Diego County and established the Presidio of San Diego. The land at Rancho Santa Margarita was given to Juan Bautista de Anza by King Felipe II of Spain in 1834 as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The property at RanchoSantaMargarita consisted of over 1,000 acres (40 hectares) and it included a number of buildings such as a chapel, cannon house, post office, bunkhouse, and Adobe Walls. The primary use for the ranch however was as grazing land for cattle and horses. From 1848 until 1862 it also served as an army depot for troops stationed in southern California during the Mexican-American War. In 1863, following the American Civil War, Mexico ceded most of Southern California to the United States including Rancho Santa Margarita. After Ulysses S Grant's March on Los Angeles in 1865 finished up what had been planned as an invasion campaign against Mexico instead ended with just a few skirmishes along the border between Californias two nations; self-proclaimed "New West" quickly became reality with America's first successful colonization effort underway: ranching! During its history at Rancho Santa Margarita some 400 families have lived there making it one of largest ranches ever created in Southern California by law or deed alone; plus many more have grazed their herds here since before any law kicked into effect inland! The name of the ranch is Spanish for "holy salt" and it refers to its natural resources, including salt water lakes and mountains. The initial population of Rancho Santa Margarita was mostly Mexican American farmers and their families, but over time other ethnic groups have joined the population, including Anglo Americans. The rancho became one of the largest in California after it was acquired by John Sutter in 1877. Sutter decided to use the land for agriculture and built irrigation systems on the lakes that irrigated his large acreage. In 1909, he donated much of his land to the state government as part of San Bernardino County. The rest of Rancho Santa Margarita was sold off and used for various purposes before being returned to Rodriguez in 1972.
