Rancho Santa Margarita, California is known as the "Gun Mecca of the West" for its numerous gun shops and mags stores. The town was founded in 1887 by Rancho Santa Margarita Indian Chief José Garza and his wife, Sara Levy. The Gun Shop at 5010 S Western Ave. became one of the most populargun stores in Southern California. It was sold to Giffords Firearms in 1990 and continues to be run by Giffords family today. In addition to its GUNS section, Rancho Santa Margarita's mags store had a seldom seen custom shop that specialized in pistol grip rifles with European make firearms such as Walther P38s and Beretta Italian pistols. In 1994, Rancho Santa Margarita's local radio station KQED-FM started playing music from all over the world on an FM frequency commonly used for Spanish language programming. One day a customer called in with an idea to use the new power to get airplay for his locally made Mexican weapons collection which he had been building since 1978. He offered to sell the airtime to other stations if they would play his favorite country music songs on their shows too! And so it began - "TheGunShopRadio Show" aired every Sunday morning from 9am-noon on KQED-FM inviting people who were interested in buying or learning about American firearms to come into the GUNS section of the mags store and listen live while we played some of our favorite tunes from Mexico!

A number of trails lead from different parts of the property into surrounding communities: Encino Creek Trail goes through Livermore Valley; Irvine Canyon Trail parallels Interstate 5 near Claremont; 134th Street Loop runs along its eastern edge between La Habra Heights and Gorman; Trails Ridge Trail leads from its northern edge near Menomonee Falls into Rolling Hills District; Pony Express Road crosses its southern border just east of Deer Park Village; Wilson Avenue skirts its western boundary on Coyote Mountain
