When the first guns were brought to Rancho Santa Margarita in 1849, there was little place to put them. The people of the area needed land for their cattle and other purposes, so they didn’t have any firearms. They did, however, have horses and dogs that could be used as muscle. So when the new governor of California arrived in 1850 with his army of volunteers to rid of Mexican settlers and start anew on the rancho, he found a readymade base from which to mount his program. The first gun lock was made by Captain John Waddell near what is now downtown Rancho Santa Margarita. This basic design worked well enough for a few years but eventually gave out because it was too heavy to be moved around easily and also Because of rustling by other farmers who had access to similar locksmithing abilities. In 1858 Captain George Atherton built a better lock at his ranch house known as “Atherton’s Fort” which stood until 1915 when it burned down. At that time this fort served as an important landmark in Rancho Santa Margarita history because it was where Governor Cooley decided to make permanent changes in how law enforcement operated on the rancho – changing from ad hoc militias (militias formed spontaneously by individual farmers) into an official force under one commander. The fact that this fort still stands today is not coincidence; It is actually evidence of how effectivelyCaptain Atherton ran things on horseback back then! He kept strict control over his troops through signals flags and nighttime patrols while Residents dealt with everyday issues like thieves raiding their property or cattle being stolen right in front of their homes! The Rancho Santa Margarita was a Spanish land grant in present-day Riverside County, California. The rancho included the present-day communities of Clarendon, Desert Hot Springs, and Sun City. It was part of the Mexican Empire from 1769 to 1821. From 1848 until 1850, it was in the United States as part of Nevada; it became a state in 1912. The Rancho Santa Margarita had been owned by José María Cárdenas since 1769. In 1848 he sold it to John Sutter for $5,000. Sutter lost interest in the property and sold it back to Cárdenas in 1850 for $10,000 more. In 1851 Juan Bautista Cabrillo explored and charted what is now Riverside County while on his way tofound San Diego Bay. He named one of its rivers—the Santa Margarita—after his patron saint, SaintMargaret of Hungary (died 1526). In 1862–63 President Abraham Lincoln approved construction of an railroad through Southern California called Central Pacific Railroad Extension which ran from Sacramento through Tooele and Salt Lake City to Los Angeles Junction where the line crossed the Colorado River at Junipero Serra National Monument east of Palm Springs. The route followed old Indian trails that linked San Bernardino with today’s Riverside County and eventually led all the way down into Mexico proper near Tijuana before terminating at Brownsville Station on Texas Gulf Railway Line near Imperial Valley
Rancho Santa Margarita is a Mexican land grant in present-day Orange County, California. It was granted by Governor Pio Pico to José Antonio Narváez on November 7, 1849. The grant extended from the eastern edge of Rancho San Buenaventura to the western edge of Rancho Santiago de la Bahia.
