Although the Gun Grabs History Museum in Rancho Santa Margarita, California has been operating since 1980, there is much about gun grips and firearms that has never been revealed. In 1875, Nicholas-Jacques Conte arrived in Rancho Santa Margarita from California with his brother Samuel. The Cone family had been ranchers in the area for many years. On October 12, 1875, they founded their original rancho, called Rancho San Marcos de los Caballeros. In 1879, after a fire destroyed part of their holdings and several other families moved to the area, the Conte brothers bought an additional parcel of land from José Joaquín Murillo and changed its name to Rancho Santa Margarita. The ranch was still held by the Conte brothers when Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna decided to make it a garrison for his army at Yuma Desert post on November 9, 1881. From here he could watch over Mexico City and carry out his plans for conquest without having to worry about military opposition from within Mexico itself.
Rancho Santa Margarita is a small, unincorporated community located in Kern County, California. The community is located on the east bank of the Tuolumne River, about northeast of downtown Fresno. It has a population of about 100 people. The area that now includes Rancho Santa Margarita was part of Rancho San Francisco de Asís grant to Don José Antonio Bodega on November 17, 1846. Bodega had come from Mexico and was an expeditioner and scout with General Mariano Cabeza de Vaca during his ill-fated Inca campaign in 1842-43. In 1846, Bodega sold the grant to Moses Isaac Cooke for $5,000. Cooke renamed it Rancho Santa Margarita after his wife's family name (Margarida) and settled some fifty or so families there in 1850. In 1876, after several fires destroyed most of the buildings in the community center (including a Methodist church), its trustees built a new building which still stands today. They also constructed a two-story schoolhouse which served as their town hall until 1901 when it burned down; the first floor became an Laundromat and second floor housed the town clerk's office until 1961 when it burned again. Most important to ranching operations were hay meadows and pastures used for cattle grazing; these are now mostly gone due to overgrazing by local farmers but some remnant patches remain managed by six ranchers who keep horses and mules for agriculture purposes only. A few houses remain from when ranching activity provided many jobs in the community: one is occupied by Mr./Mrs.(?) Rancho Santa Margarita, California was founded in 1876 by Antonio L. Alvarado and his wife, Maria Elena Ramirez. The rancho included land that is now the city of Santa Margarita and part of the County of San Luis Obispo. Rancho Santa Margarita was located near Point Conception on the southern coast of California. The site had been a small mission town called Mission San Francisco de Asís which had been founded in 1795 by Father Junípero Serra. The first people to live on Rancho Santa Margarita were Sephardic Jews who arrived from Spain in 1836. They built a cabin known as the Villa Real, which still stands today. Rancho Santa Margarita became a cattle ranch and later became a sheep ranch. In 1916, Antonio Alvarado sold his share of the ranch to John Sutter who began developing it into an agricultural center with mills, dairy farms and other businesses. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge purchased part of Rancho Santa Margarita for $10 million dollars which he used to help create the State Of California out of parts of Mexico and Yucatan which then joined California as part of Admira
In 1846, Mexico ceded Rancho Santa Margarita to the United States. The land was used as a ranch by American farmers and ranchers until it was leased to the government in 1912. In 1916, Rancho Santa Margarita became part of the 12,000-acre (4,600 km2) Rinconada National Wildlife Refuge.
