In the early 1800s, Rancho Santa Margarita was a small ranch in southern California. It was part of Rancho San Antonio and its main purpose was to produce cattle. In 1847, the Mexican government granted Rancho Santa Margarita to George Parke Custis. Custis used it as his hunting ground and developed a system of firing rifles from horseback so that he could track game down. The first firearm to be made in Rancho Santa Margarita was an old muzzleloader called the "Pete" which was put into use in 1849. The rifle became known locally as the "Patriots Rifle." In 1860, John Cockerill bought the ranch and started production of firearms there. At first, all firearms were made with black powder but soon Cockerill switched to revolvers using blue powder. By 1865, revolver production had ceased at Rancho Santa Margarita due to competition from Colt's Manufacturing Company in America. However, during World War II, revolver manufacturing resumed at Rancho Santa Margaritaty due to new demand from American soldiers stationed in California

Rancho Santa Margarita, California is a small community in Kern County, California that was founded by pioneers in the 1850s. The town and its surrounding countryside were first owned by the Hudsons, who leased it from the Mexican government. In 1875, two brothers, John Sutter and George Hearst, purchased the Rancho Santa Margarita land from the Hudsons for $2 million. They began to build a ranch house and other buildings on the property. The House of Wagon Wheel was built in 1876. Rancho Santa Margarita became part of Hearst's empire after he bought all of Northern California in 1895. Rancho Santa Margarita was founded in 1853 by Rancho Santa Anita landowner Juan Bautista Alvarado. The ranch became a part of the San Gabriel Valley and then the Angeles National Forest, before becoming part of California in 1920. The first people to live on the Rancho Santa Margarita were pioneers who arrived in 1853 from Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. They built their homes on high ground overlooking Mission Bay. The first store opened in 1854 and soon there were several schools, including one for Native Americans. In 1865, Mexican artist José Clemente Orozco created paintings of beauty on theranchos which are still popular among tourists today. In 1880, ranchers John Sutter and James Irvine bought the property from Alvarado for $2 million dollars. The two men set about developing it into what is now known as Rancho Santa Margarita County Museum District. They started by building an irrigation system to bring water to their crops from underground sources and creating miles of hiking trails that are still used today by hikers, cyclists and other outdoor enthusiasts alike. In 1919 they developed the first motel in southern California when they opened the now defunct Hotel del Coronado on Point Reyes Boulevard in Del Mar Beach.

The Rancho Santa Margarita land grant, granted in 1848 to José Torres, was a part of the Rancho San Ysidro Mexican Land Grant. The rancho included an area of present-day Ventura County and extended into what is now Los Angeles County. The grant was given for the purpose of raising livestock and developing a citrus industry. José Torres ran the ranch until his death in 1853, when it passed to his son Francisco. In 1878, two years after Francisco's death, it passed to his grandson Manuel. Manuel sold the ranch in 1913 to Fred Condon. In 1916, Condon donated it to the City of Ventura for use as public land.
