Rancho Santa Margarita was a ranch in the California Cascades that was founded by James Irvine in 1873. The ranch stretched from present-day Fillmore to the east and south of San Francisco, covering an area of about 176 square miles. In 1916, it was merged with other Ranchos Santa Margarita, Hacienda Santa Anita, and Mission San Antonio de Padua to form the Stockton-San Joaquin Valley Agricultural District. The district's agricultural production totaled more than two million acres in 1944. The Rancho Santa Margarita land area has been gradually eroded since its original purchase by Mr. Irvine and his partners. Today, only a few scattered acres remain within the city limits of Fillmore and Sacramento County; much of the remainder is within or near Interstate 80 between Stockton and Turlock. Restoration work on some sections of the rancho began in 1951, but have not yet resulted in full restoration for all areas; current estimates suggest that about $50 million will be necessary to achieve complete restoration across all three RanchosSantaMargarita complexes. Rancho Santa Margarita is significant both as a historic site and as one of the earliest examples of cooperative farming in California history. It was also an important center for cattle raising during World War II because it supplied feed for army troops stationed along the western coastlines of North America.
Rancho Santa Margarita was founded in 1800 by Rancho de la Cruz grantee Manuel Nieto. The name is derived from the Mexican word "santa margarita," meaning "clear of trash." The rancho included part of what is now San Bernardino County and portions of Orange County. In 1825, theranch purchased land east of today's City of Riverside from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $5,000. In 1857, Mexico gained its independence from Spain, and Mexico assumed control over California. In 1858, the U.S. government acquired title to Rancho Santa Margarita from Mexico as part of a policy known as Manifest Destiny. This meant that the United States wouldclaim all open territory west of the Appalachian Mountains and north ofMexican soil in order to increase its population and resources. At this time, Rancho Santa Margarita consistedof about 6 square miles (15 km2). The first settlers on Rancho Santa Margarita were José Nunez and Vicente Guerrero. Nunez arrived in 1795 and started farming rice and livestock near present-day Cathedral City; he died in 1810 after a long life at the rancho. Guerrero arrived two years laterand began building a Adobe Walls house near present-day Sylmar; he also builta small chapel nearby which still stands today. Both men were very successful farmers who raised beef, pigs, horses, dairy products, cottonseed oil, potatoes and other crops along with their animals. In 1835 Angelina Jolie was married to Captain James Ayeron at San Nicolas Obispo Church across the street from where her father had been baptized thirty years earlier by Father Jose de la Vega y Lolosa under his original name Pedro Gomez de Ayreon (1807-1876). After Captain Ayeron's death in 1850 she married John Fenton at Mission Viejo on October 20th following her conversion to Catholicism on December 12th that year aboard USS Constitution during a voyage up San Francisco Bay made possible by Commodore Perry's visit to Monterey Peninsula three weeks earlier
