Rancho Santa Margarita was founded in 1853 by José María Garza and his wife, Juana de la Cruz. The Garza family soon became owners of over 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land in the region now known as California. In 1861, when Mexico gained independence from Spain, the rancho came under Mexican rule. In 1916 it was purchased by American businessman Cecil B. DeMille who leased it to Hollywood producer Darryl Zanuck for $1 million. Zanuck turned it into one of Hollywood's most famous movie studios with such productions as "The Godfather", "The Magnificent Seven" and "For Whom the Bell Tolls".
