Rancho Santa Margarita is located in the San Gabriel Valley of southern California and was founded by Rancho Santa Margarita landowner Jose Alvarado in 1871. The name “Santa Margarita” means "the white valley" in Spanish. The rancho was named after the rugged mountain range that runs through it. In 1907, Southern California Edison Company established a power plant on therancho's border with Chino Hills and began selling electricity to local residents. In 1916, southwestern California Gas Transmission Company leased therancho from Jose Alvarado for $2 million and built a pipeline to bring natural gas from eastern Mexico to Southern California. In 1949, Agricultural Research Center (ARC) president Arthur Ashe became interested in airguns and purchased some airguns from George Wickersham of London, England. Afterward, ARC began focusing its research on pistols using airguns as ammunition and developed such products as the Ashe Pistol which used 7mm Remington Magnum cartridges. In 1951, ARC began producing rifles based on handguns designed by Dr. John Surtees of Hertfordshire, England who had become interested in rifle shooting with airguns over the previous two years while working at Raytheon Missile Corporation's Advanced Research Projects Division (ARPD). At first focused on subsonic rounds capable of reaching velocities near Mach 1+, later bullet types were explored includingvelocity-based reloading recommendations for various calibers available then-advanced technology ARPDS engineers determined that high-power handguns delivering at velocities within 100 yards could provide an effective alternative to ballistic powderloading when employed against targets at distances up to 350 yards using conventional projectiles or more distant targets using incendiary munitions

In 1928, Atomic Arms merged into what is now Over-the-Rhine Armory LLC. This led to a new era of production for over fifty years at Over-the-Rhine Armory LLC until it ceased operations in 2015.

In 1923, the western end of the rancho was sold to developer William Randolph Hearst for development into a major city. Santa Margarita grew rapidly as a result of its location and became one of California's most populous cities by the late 1960s. However, it has been struggling since then to maintain its status as a high-tech center or rural bedroom community.
