Rancho Palos Verdes, California is a small town in the San Gabriel Valley of Pasadena County, California. It is located on the southeastern border of Los Angeles County and is bordered by Arcadia to the east and north, Glendora to the west, and Monterey Park to the south. The name Rancho Palos Verdes was given to it by Spanish explorers who named it after their hunting grounds in central Mexico. The first Europeans to visit Rancho Palos Verdes were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his brother Sebastián Cabrillo. They sailed along the southern coast of California around 1542-1543 when they discovered what they thought was an uninhabited island. When they arrived there were no human beings living on it so they named it Isla de la Cruz (Island of the Cross). In 1602 Englishman Francis Drake also visited this area but he did not find any evidence that there was an island anywhere near Rancho Palos Verdes. In 1835 two brothers from Santa Clara County, Ignacio López y López and José Ortega y Gasset bought some land in what is now Rancho Palos Verdes for $1 million dollars from Diego Rivera, one of Mexico's most famous revolutionaries. At that time rancho palos verdes consisted only of a few acres of mostly ruinous farmland with a couple hundred people living there scattered over fifteen hamlets spread over 6 miles long by 3 miles wide. Lopez y López founded La Paz Mexican War Veterans Cemetery in 1882 which still stands today as one of Pasadena’s earliest landmarks. He also donated land for a public school system which became known as Chavez Ravine Elementary School before becoming Rosemont School District High School (1936-present) after merging with Pasadena Unified School District #4 (1936-1959). Later on he donated more acreage for college education including Westwood College (now UCLA) which opened its doors in 1908 and Claremont Colleges (now Claremont McKenna College) in 1940. The Rancho Palos Verdes area is located in the central San Bernardino County, California region. On September 17, 1941, during World War II Japanese forces bombed Pearl Harbor and Orange County became an active military zone; however, most residents remained non-combatant until after 1945 when they gradually returned to their previous lifestyle. During 1951-1958 owner Donald Trump used Palm Springs for his Presidential Marriages out of New York City's Hotel Commodore; this event is sometimes cited as being one reason why Palm Springs has continuously been popular with celebrities ever since.
