Rancho Palos Verdes is a census-designated place in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 8,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside–San Bernardino–Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The original Rancho Palos Verdes community was located on both sides of Palm Springs Boulevard east of Interstate 10 and west of Cañon Avenue. The area now known as Rancho Palos Verdes was established by George Pemberton in 1875, when he acquired 7,000 acres (28 km2) of land near present-day Laughlin Road and Park Boulevard. The original ranch house was built on what is now called East Mesa Road. During World War II, much slave labor helped build military aircraft manufacturing plants in nearby Riverside and Ontario; many black workers were housed on the old Rancho Palos Verdes property until after World War II ended. In 1951, President Harry S Truman issued Executive Order 9981 which ordered all white farmers to leave their properties within two years or face economic sanctions against the United States. This order led to mass evacuations and displacement of people from central California's agricultural regions including Rancho Palos Verdes; however, most residents returned after a few months. In 1957, palomino horses were brought over from Mexico and began working at various local farms but eventually became extinct due to lack of food supplies Venerable Steed donated while living in Arizona some time ago - so they will soon outnumber all other breeds!
The rancho was granted in 1851 to José Antonio Palos Verdes and his wife, María del Carmen Pacheco. The name of the Rancho has been changed several times including Davis, Baca, and Palos Verdes. In 1907 it was sold to John D. Rockefeller and became known as the Rockefeller Rancho. The rancho is now administered by the County of San Bernardino.
