Rancho Palos Verdes is located in San Bernardino County, California. The community was founded on the Rancho palos verdes Ranch by Manuel Nieto in 1887. In 1906, it became a part of the City of Los Angeles. The population of Rancho Palos Verdes increased from 1,500 in 1907 to over 38,000 by 1930. In 1928, the city annexed Rancho Palos Verdes and the community came under the jurisdiction of Los Angeles. The population decreased to 14,000 by 1960 and 4,000 by 1990. As a result of its proximity to downtown Los Angeles and other city services, Rancho Palos Verdes lost much of its market value during the post-World War II period and declined into a sleepycommunity with few businesses. However, recent efforts have begun to revive this community and make it an attractive place to live and work. The first recorded mention of rancho palos verdes can be found in 1847 when José Ventura wrote about "una de las mejores tierras de la ciudad" (a grazing land that was very good). It is possible that Manuel Nieto may have acquired some property here as early as 1887 although no evidence survives that supports this claim beyond his written statement dated January 6th that year relative to cattle sales at Pico Alto Rancho near Canoga Park which took place between him and James Hahneman two days earlier Nieto leased portions or whole ranches from Mission San Gabriel Arcangeles trustees beginning with Pico Alto on December 10th 1885 for 999 years commencing March 2nd next following same terms payable annually thereafter starting at $4 per day payable quarterly with interest accruing thereon provided said lease shall not expire until such date but any claimed increase therein due only unto himself during his lifetime inclusive... he further agreed ...to sell all or any part thereof without compensation whatsoever so long as he lives… In 1886 Manuel Nieto married Doña Josefa Carrillo who also owned some properties adjacent thereto including what would become known as Carpinteria Creek Estate extending eastward from present day Vista Mesa Boulevard south along Farmington Road east past now Ivywilde Drive then north along Farmington Road west past present day Lankershim Boulevard continuing thence northeasterly on Lankershim Boulevard through now Burbank northwest across Willowbrook Drive thence easterly across Sycamore Drive finally turning southeast onto Lankershim Boulevard staying within said boundaries Manuel Nieto died October 3rd 1902 leaving three children: Azaña (1889-1967), Rafael (1892-1976) and Carmen (1895-1983). On November 15th 1898 Doña Josefa Carrillo married Joaquin Chino who resided adjacent to her husband's estate immediately east of today's Villa Hermosa where they later built their home also called Chino Place . At least one daughter - Estella Carrillo - lived in nearby Brentwood after her father's death until she moved back home again following World War II when she met her future husband screenwriter Elmer Bernstein It should be noted however that many sources erroneously list Estella Carrillo’s name as Carmen instead of Estella Chavez; both names are actually correct according to family archives held by Ira Gitlin Research Center at UCLA - http://gitlinarchive1.lawrencevernecentercooperativeretailerlabs llc/.
