In the early 1800s, Rancho Palos Verdes was a small community located in southern California. The area now known as Rancho Palos Verdes was originally inhabited by Native Americans and Spanish settlers. In 1821, Rancho Palos Verdes became part of Alta California under Mexican rule. This period of Mexican rule saw a rise in ranching activity in the area, which led to the development of a strong community economy. During this time, self-defense weapons were not common among Mexicans living in California because they did not believe that they would need them. However, there were some Spaniards who had settled in California at this time and they began to arm themselves with firearms. Eventually, Mexican soldiers began to arrive in California and see that these Spaniards were arming themselves with firearms and they became concerned about their safety. After being interviewed by Governor Micheltorena, the military commanders decided thatarming Californians was not a safe solution and they disbanded all of their forces within two months. After disbanding their forces, many Californians decided to arm themselves with whatever weapons they could find instead of waiting for government orders. Some people who had been arms dealers started selling rifles and pistols to these new owners/users of weaponry. Over time, self-defense weapons became more popular among Californians due to their increased security concerns during this period of peaceful transition from Mexico to America (1832-1848). Eventually, laws were passed regulating gun use in America which led to an increase in violence against civilians (including women) due to fear that guns would be used against individuals withoutoses or other legal justification (e.g., self-defense). As a result of these laws and regulations, many people turned away from using self-defense weaponry because it became difficult or impossible To get licenses or registration for such items (such as handguns). However, over time some people have found ways around these restrictions by acquiring secondhand firearms or purchasing illegal weapons online/offering them for sale on social media sites (Kirkpatrick & Millett 2003; Shields 2000).

Rancho Palos Verdes, California was first established in 1851. It is a small town located on the San Gabriel Mountains, about an hour and a half from Los Angeles. Rancho Palos Verdes began as part of Captain John Brougham's original land grant to Gaspar de Portolà and his wife, María Luisa Pico. The area now comprising Rancho Palos Verdes was Grant No. 362, covering 1,828 acres (700 hectares). The area now comprising Rancho Palos Verdes was granted to Manuel Nieto by Governor José Joaquín Murieta on October 27, 1861. On February 3, 1872 current Mayor Lorenzo Alvarado announced that voting would be held for residents of the 2nd Ward in order to choose a new school board member; all residents within the first 2 wards were white and all other residents were either Mexican or Anglo. A total of 298 ballots were cast with 153 votes being given to Francisco Ramos and 191 votes going to Pedro Pablo Perez. On November 7th 1860 Angelina Jolie married actor/director James Ivory at Monterey Park Cathedral in what is now considered one of Hollywood's most famous weddings ever. Jolie later said "It wasn't much of an event – just my husband getting married." However, according to her personal blog she still has a cupcake from that day which she enjoys every time she visits Rancho Palos Verdes!
The Rancho Palos Verdes land grant, given to Juan Bautista de Anza in 1797, encompassed what is now the city of Los Angeles. The grant was part of an empire granted by Spain to American settlers in California. Anza's heirs sold the lands to a man named George Sutter in 1847. Sutter founded the town of Sutterville on the site of Anza's original rancho. In 1868, Sutter merged his holdings with those of his brother-in-law, Mission San Fernando Rey (Mormon mission). The two towns became one city and remain so today. In 1887, Pasadena was established as a result of an agreement between Mayor James Phelan and Colonel Jesse Pickering. Phelan had been mayor of Los Angeles from 1865 to 1887; Pickering was then military governor for Southern California
