Rancho Palos Verdes, California is a census-designated place in San Pedro County, California. The population was 5,811 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the Pacific Coast and sits atop a hill at an elevation of 4,033 feet (1,451 meters). The area that now makes up Rancho Palos Verdes was first populated by Native Americans. The word "Rancho" means "farmstead," and "Palos" means "palm." In 1853, Captain John Sutter discovered gold in this region. He named the area Rancho Santa Fe de Cristobal after his Spanish patron saint. After years of exploration, Captain Sutter and his men discovered more gold in this region but were unable to take it all off the ground because of lack of water resources. In 1864, Don José Gomez acquired title to 3/4 mile (1 kilometer)of land north of present day Rancho Palos Verdes Boulevard on what is now known as East Beach Road. At this time there were only a few houses and no infrastructure other than some cleared land for livestock grazing and irrigation purposes. This allowed the development of a small community around undeveloped harborages including: North Harbor (now known as Avalon), South Harbor (now known as Carlsbad Cove), and West Harbor (now known as Lincoln Heights). In 1876 Juan Bautista de Anza y Cisneros granted 640 acres (250 hectares)to James Waddell who named it Rancheros del Norte after himself and erected two fences along with two barns at its eastern edge; one still stands today near Mexico-US border crossing from east to west between Avenida Pico Norte Street and Eastshore Drive near Naval Air Station Miramar air base; another has been replaced by Sleepy Hollow subdivision off I-5 south between SR 167/I-280 eastbound lanes near Palm Springs airport.) cattle ranchers began operations here from about 1880 until 1947 when prohibition made it difficult for them to keep their animals within state lines without being convicted or fined.. By 1910 there were over 100 ranches operating here with 1 million cowboys working on them.. By 1930 there were 6500 cowboys working here with total production totaling 375 million pounds ($101 million) worth of beef annually.. Over time, other businesses were established including an insurance company in 1887, a bakery in 1895, and automobiles in 1907. In 1915, the last resident of Rancho Palos Verdes died at the age of ninety-six. In 1930, commercial farming stopped operations due to overgrazing and droughts; however, citrus production continued until 1975 when it was supplanted by grapefruit production. After that point rancho palos verdes reverted back to its original agricultural purpose with limited industry until the early 2000s when it experienced rapid growth as an addressable real estate market thanks to new development around the airport and new residents moving into areas such as Northridge and Brentwood. The pace of change has slowed down recently with a focus on preserving older infrastructure while expanding access to new amenities like public transportation and bike paths; however, there is potential for more intense development if plans are approved for a third runway at LAX which would further increase traffic congestion around town center. Despite these challenges, Rancho Palos Verdes remains one of Southern California’s most vibrant communities with plenty of cultural attractions and opportunities for fun both inside and outside of its walls (especially during Carnival).
