Rancho Palos Verdes, California is a small town in Los Angeles County, California. It is located on the Pacific Coast and lies about 22 miles (35 km) east of downtown Los Angeles. The ZIP code for Rancho Palos Verdes is 90272. As of the 2010 census, the population was 13,674. The first rancho in what is now Rancho Palos Verdes was granted to Manuel Nieto by Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado on November 12, 1821. At that time it covered an area of only 1 square mile (2 hectares). President James K. Polk issued a proclamation declaring July 25th, 1847 as Rancho Palos Verdes Day in honor of the grantees and their families who had helped to make that community notable. The name "Rancho Palos Verdes" was derived from two Spanish words: palusa or beach and verdes or greenwood trees. The original grantees were José Gabriel Orozco y Linares, Nicolas Corona de Anza y Sánchez Pacheco, Francisco Vásquez Cabrillo and Gaspar de Portolansky; all of whom came from San Diego County. Some new grants were made throughout the years including: Rancho La Brea Adobe Grantee (1859), Rancho Santa Fe del Norte Grantee (1865), and more recently Rancho Mirage at Desert Sands which became part of Miramar Community College District in 1984 when that college purchased adjacent land within the community boundaries

The name "Rancho Palos Verdes" was first applied to the area by Captain John Sutter during his search for a new settlement near modern-day Pasadena in 1846. The post office at Rancho Palos Verdes opened on July 15, 1853, and remained open until it closed on December 4, 1957. At its peak, Rancho Palos Verdes had an population of 681 residents. The community gradually lost popularity as development moved closer to Los Angeles and other points of interest within driving distance. However, the old ranch house still stands today as a museum and is used as a residence by Hollywood stars such as Clint Eastwood. In 1933, Robert Hutton purchased 573 acres (225 hectares) adjoining that of his uncle Willis Hutton's holdings at present day North Hillsborough Avenue and Agoura Drive in Southern California for $1 million dollars cash after purchasing their holdings from their parents following World War I. As soon as he acquired the property he began building what would become known as "Hutton Park". Named after him, it includes both parkland and homes which were designed by architect Alfred Jarry with elements inspired by English country villages such as Hampton Court Palace and Windsor Castle although many have been demolished over time including Hutton's childhood home Noe Valley Station where he entertained Presidents Franklin D Roosevelt and Harry S Truman before they left for Washington D C . In 1955 President Eisenhower dedicated portions of Greenbelt Park adjacent to Hutton Park in honor of his predecessor who had also been instrumental in developing much of the cityscape around Los Angeles including this park now called Emancipation Park adjacent to Staples Center . Upon completion however much work still needed to be done such as completing streetlights/paving etc before becoming accessible primarily to pedestrians rather than vehicular traffic which has continued ever since outside bike riders can now enjoy this vast expanse without fear of getting lost
