Rancho Palos Verdes, California is a small town in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, California. It is located on the edge of a large rancho that was part of Rancho Santa Anita. The name "Rancho Palos Verdes" means "Green Ranch". The first European to visit Rancho Palos Verdes was Juan Bautista de Anza on October 15, 1769. He named it after his patron saint, St. Joseph. The first Europeans to live in Rancho Santa Anita were Francisco Vásquez and Pedro Fortunato Chávez. They built a cabin there in 1775. A year later they also built a larger cabin which they called La Casa Blanca (The White House). In 1802, Alvarado y Barón sold La Casa Blanca to José Joaquín Crespí for $40,000 cash. Crespí named it "El Dorado." In 1853, an Englishman by the name of George Armstrong gave money to Thomas Edison to build an electric power plant at Catalina Island near what is now Long Beach City Hall Park in order to get electricity for his new Kinney & Edison Electric Railway Company business venture in Southern California! AfterEdison's death in 1893 without leaving any heirs, his partner Samuel Inskeep took over running the company and renamed it General Electric Company! But because GE had no connection with America's Mexican-born population unleashed by President Porfirio Diaz on February 14th 1913 following passage of the Nationality Act – known as “The Compromise” – GE eventually lost its American citizenship and became part of British Empire! It wasn't until 1936 when United States Senator from Californians Hiram Johnson (D-Los Angeles) successfully lobbied then President Franklin D Roosevelt for passage of the Gun Control Act Amendments of 1934 that GE finally regained its full American citizenship! In 1929, President Herbert Hoover signed legislation creating the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at Congress's request and Rancho Palos Verdes became one of its first "test sites." The ranch remains an important space center today with two NASA centers located there: Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and UCLA's Aerojet Research Center. The history of Rancho Palos Verdes goes back to 1887 when John S.Pemberton and his brother GeorgeW.Pemberton bought 640 acres in what is now Irvine Valley from José Gomez de la Torre for $3 per acre. In 1888 they built their first house on what is now Pioneer Place; it still stands today as a historical landmark known as the original Ranchero House. They continued to grow their land until they had 1,500 acres which they sold in 1903 to Juana Baez de la Vega for $5 per acre ($100 million today). From this initial purchase they added 350 more acres over time until they had 4,800 acres total - all situated within Irvine Valley proper - making them one of Southern California's largest landholders at that time (and still are). In 1905 he married Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney; she was also an American socialite who had been born into a wealthy family in New York City but decided to move westward after her father died when she was only 10 years old. They lived at 5 ranches across Northern Mexico before moving back eastward to North Hollywood where Gertrude started living with her sister Mary Hearst while John met Gertrude’s mother – María Elena Garza y Valdés – on Christmas Day 1907 at their home at 5657 Beverly Hills Boulevard near Vine Street where she worked as maidservant; Gertrude would later marry him on December 12th 1916 (they would have six children together). John SperberTON moved his family again when World War I began: he enlisted in 1917 as an Ensign with the United States Naval Reserve Corps serving aboard battleship USS Oregon (BB-41) off San Diego Bay during World War I before returning home via Pearl Harbor on November 11th 1918 after Japan bombed Hawaii resulting in America declaring war on Japan without asking Russia or Germany! He served continuously through many wars throughout those years including 2 terms as Governor of Los Angeles before retiring due to ill health on January 3rd 1937 having already accomplished more than any other LA Mayor! He passed away three months later after being certified “in good health” by then-Governor Franklin D Roosevelt who said he “will be remembered long after our own struggles are done” because Rancho PalosVerdes “has given us so much happiness during these difficult times” according to Vice President Henry Wallace who attended his Funeral Service onboard USS Constitution (CV-17), becoming perhaps America’s last sitting Secretary of State! ranchpaloverdescaliforniala
