Rancho Palos Verdes, California is a census-designated place in San Luis Obispo County, California. The population was 5,948 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The name "Rancho" comes from Spanish and means "ranch." The first rancho was established in 1836 by Manuel Nieto on land that now includes Rancho Palos Verdes Peninsula. In 1875, management of the peninsula passed to Julius Yount and then to his son John Dutton. In 1912, management passed to Harry Chandler who ran it until his death in 1950. It was through Chandler's ownership that PALOS VERDES GARDENS opened as a public garden on May 21, 1952. Today this important cultural landmark continues to be managed by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks with support from Santa Monica County government and private donations. Rancho Palos Verdes is located south of downtown Los Angeles on a long peninsula bounded by three major rivers: Encinal Creek on the north, Pacific Ocean on the south, and Arroyo Seco Creek on the east (the mouth of which forms LA Harbor). On its western end it shares an borders with Ventura County while its eastern border coincides with that of San Luis Obispo County. The climate here varies greatly according to location near ocean or inland mountain ranges whose temperature extremes range from extreme cold during winter months (−20°F (−4°C) day/night), through hot summers (+120°F/+50°C), cool fall days (−10°F (−12°C), and mild winter nights (0% relative humidity). These conditions are caused by mountains nearby or within driving distance making rainfall rare; however they can also be created artificially when reservoirs are enlarged due to over-pumping for water users in adjacent cities such as Culver City or West Hills

Rancho Palos Verdes is located on the southeastern edge of San Diego County, in the unincorporated community of Rancho Mirage. The name "Rancho Palos Verdes" was given to the area by Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna, who named it for two small cattle ranches he owned in present-day Rancho Palos Verdes and Palm Springs. The original ranch consisted of about 5,000 acres (2 km²). Today, Rancho Palos Verdes has over 190,000 residents and encompasses many industries including agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, and services. The first European to visit Rancho Palos Verdes was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 25, 1542. Heading a party of thirteen men from La Jolla aboard the Santiago de California was one of Cabrillo's objectives - to explore and map out a route for future Spanish settlers travelling down the western coast of North America. Other members of his exploratory party were Manuel Nieto (the Pilot), Bartolomé de las Casas y Zaragoza (Governor), Nicolás de Oviedo y Cámpora (Master Sergeant) and Gaspar de Portolà (Captain). The land that would become Rancho Palos Verdes had been used as an Indian reserve since 1849. In 1857 Act No. 7 passed by Congress created a government run agricultural estate called Mission San Francisco del Valle near what is now known as Topanga Canyon Boulevard in Southern California. In 1863 Captain John Sutter built Sutter's Fort at what is now Topanga Beach on 871 acres (340 ha). At this time there were about fifty civilian workers living at Sutter's fort with supplies and ammunition for the soldiers garrisoning it. shortly afterwards another military detachment arrived – this time under Colonel George Armstrong Custer – who established Camp Douglas south of Topanga Canyon Boulevard on November 9th 1863 along with his artillery battery under Lieutenant Colonel James Aiken Higginson. AfterORebeck's expedition discovered Gold reserves nearby in 1848–1849 camp facilities were expanded to include dwellings for twenty five officers and men as well as an arsenal/ammunition depot capable of firing hundred round rounds per minute! By 1865 most civilian workers had either left or been removed following reports that gold deposits existed only a short distance away at Los Alamitos Creek; however few if any attempts have been made ever since to recover evidence associated with these potential riches! In 1870 Major Don Carlos Ortiz acquired 1 mile eastward along Topanga Canyon Boulevard from Colonel Higginson'sBatteryAikenHiggsinson towards today's eastern boundary within present day City limits of Encinitas; construction began soon thereafter totaling some 6 miles (.9 km) northward into what would eventually become part of today’s city limits! On December 3rd 1870 Major Ortiz filed submitted Plan Of Subdivision For Rancho El Rey which included current Town Limit lines extending northeasterly into today’s city limits! The lots sold off within months resulting in more than 4 square miles (.22 km²) being developed currently comprising almost all present day town boundaries!! Development continued apace until 1888 when severe drought devastated much portions southern California causing many farmers to sell their lands within our rural boundaries; during this time there were also several large population growth rates amongst our residents !! Finally by 1910 developers halted further development due largely to new local tax laws which limited increases allowed+in real estate values!) Over half a century later existing infrastructure still remains largely unchanged providing access +to innumerable businesses encompassing health care services, restaurants +stores etc.; making us one major destination +factor +in both social & economic life inside & outside ourtiny town!!!
