The population of Rancho Palos Verdes at the 2010 census was 82,549. The first people who lived on Rancho Palos Verdes were Spanish settlers who arrived in 1765. The area that now makes up Rancho Palos Verdes was part of Mission San Fernando Rey de la Laguna until 1821 when it became part of Alta California under Mexican rule. In 1846, after Mexico lost its war with United States, Rancho Palos Verdes became a part of what would become Orange County. In 1872, following gold discoveries in nearby Fillmore and Moberly Counties, many farmers began moving into Rancho Palos Verdes from other parts of Southern California looking for a piece of land with good soil and rich mineral resources. By 1888 ranch hands were working over 1 million acres (500 km²) of land in what is now Orange County. In 1907 two wealthy Americans founded an agricultural cooperative called Salk Co., which grew crops such as apples and strawberries on 1 million acres (500 km²) near their grove-the largest private forestland holdings in North America at that time-and quickly expanded production to include other crops such as corn, beans, cotton and wheat. With this new emphasis on growing food for local consumption rather than export or shipment abroad helped make RanchoPalosVerdes one of Southern California's most prosperous farming communities for many years. A few years later however another development took place that would have far-reaching consequences for both locals and visitors: World War I broke out; military contracts suddenly became available; ranchers turned their attention to creating munitions plants throughout southern Orange County sprawling across hundreds of square miles (1 000 km²). This led to increased traffic congestion on open roads leading into town where people could buy goods they couldn't produce themselves; prices went up as transportation costs soared while jobs dried up due to wartime shortages caused by importation restrictions placed upon American businesses by Europe following their own conflict with Germany. In 1907, the City of Los Angeles purchased the remaining 2,000 acres from Captain Fenton for $1 million. From 1907-1960, Rancho Palos Verdes was part of Orange County and was known as "The Oaks". On February 14, 1960, portions of Rancho Palos Verdes were transferred to San Diego County for use as a muni-coastal area called "Rancho Santa Ana." Today there are over 9,000 residents living in Rancho Palos Verdes including 1,600 students at the local high school which is also home to the county's only professional sports team (the Chargers). There are also several businesses located on the community's main square such as jewelers and clothing stores. The community has recently undergone an extensive renovation project which included new streets and sidewalks; a new library; and a number of community amenities such as tennis courts and athletic fields.

In 1925, the Rancho Palos Verdes Land and Water Company was created to manage the land and water resources for the community. In 1951, Rancho Palos Verdes became part of the City of Industry. In 1978, Rancho Palos Verdes became a subdivision of Los Angeles County.
