The treaty that ended the Mexican-American War defined El Dorado Parish as including present-day Rancho Palos Verdes as well as unincorporated areas east and south of Bakersfield Boulevard and west of State Route 116 (the old road running between downtown Bakersfield and Pleasure VALLEY). On March 3, 1860 – eight months after Californio Mike Brown fought his final battle against Ulysses S. Grant's forces at Monterey Peninsula – Mexico ceded control over all but about 6 miles (10 kilometers) of inland southern San Joaquin Valley to the United States pursuant to Treaty #8 which ended the American Civil War. Although there had been sporadic immigration from Southern California since 1847 (and especially since 1850), no large-scale immigration occurred until enterprising Europeans began coming looking for land grants near ports such as Stockton or Sacramento in order to establish new missions or plantations northward along what would become known as Valley Road/Highway 99W (later US 101). This enormous influx led both Mexicans and Anglo Americans alike to rename their holdings according to their new political allegiance: manyMissionaries called their holdings "Ranchos," while others simply gave them new namesakes like "Los Padres" or "Churches." Bakersfield had long been one of Northern Californias most important commercial centers; its growth during this period can be traced back largely through connections made by Sam Brannan with early entrepreneurs David Stonehill and George Wills; stone walls still line Main Street today because much business took place behind them during those days without any formality whatsoever Another key player in this early phase appeared to be John Crain who served as general merchandise agent with Wills & Co., importing items such as flour, sugar beets etc., into Bakersfield from upstate New York
