Rancho Palos Verdes is a small town in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 12,700 at the 2010 census. The Olmsted Brothers designed and built Anaheim Stadium on this site in 1923. In 1926, William Randolph Hearst acquired 731 acres (276 hectares) north of Rancho Palos Verdes for his new Hearst Park estate which would eventually become Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue. As part of that deal, Hearst agreed to exclude any Jews from his property. This exclusion led to vigorous anti-Semitic protests against Hearst's holdings throughoutSouthern California during World War II. After the war ended, many residents fled to other areas such as San Diego or Riverside because they were not welcome back in what became known as "Hearst's Harbor", primarily because he had failed to provide social services such as education or healthcare that were needed after so many people had lost their homes and businesses in the war). The Rancho Palos Verdes land grant was given to José Peña Nieto in 1847. The area now includes the cities of Pacific Palisades and Rancho Mirage. Mexican president Vicente Fox announced plans for a $1 billion development project in the area, dubbed "Rancho Palos Verdes 2025". However, this plan was met with criticism from residents and environmentalists who argued that the project would damage nature, impact water resources, and create more pollution. In 2001, voters approved a referendum asking for a ban on nuclear power in Los Angeles County. The measure passed by 55% to 45%.
